Australia Imposes Bold Social Media Ban for Under-16s, Prompting Industry Response
In a groundbreaking move, the Australian government has announced a ban on social media for children under the age of 16, set to take effect from December 10. This policy, lauded by many parents and guardians, aims to shield young users from the potential dangers of online platforms such as cyberbullying, grooming, and exposure to inappropriate content.
Under the new regulations, platforms like X, Instagram, and TikTok will no longer permit users under 16 to maintain a social media account, mandating that all existing profiles be deactivated. Those under the age limit will also be barred from setting up new accounts, marking Australia as the first nation to implement such a sweeping social media restriction.
The government argues that the ban addresses a growing concern over the mental health and safety of minors in an increasingly digital world. Officials believe that removing access to these platforms will significantly reduce the risks that children face online—a sentiment echoed by many parents who worry about their children’s engagement with social media.
However, the ban has sparked a wave of criticism. Young campaigners have voiced their concerns, claiming that the new law infringes upon children’s rights to express themselves and connect with peers. The move has also ignited a debate over the effectiveness of such legislation, with critics suggesting that it may push vulnerable teenagers toward less supervised online spaces, where they could face even greater dangers.
Social media platforms itself have also raised alarms about the proposed legislation, arguing that it could prove challenging to enforce. Companies warn that the age restriction may not adequately tackle the issues at hand and could inadvertently isolate young users who rely on social platforms for community and support.
As the countdown to December 10 begins, both advocates and detractors of the ban are preparing for a digital landscape that could reshape the online experiences of millions of Australian youths. The effectiveness and consequences of this bold policy are yet to unfold, as all eyes turn to Australia to witness how this unprecedented social media regulation will be implemented and its impact on the future of young internet users.

well done aussies
I think it's a great step forward to protect these addictive devices from youth. Good job, Australia!
It’s crazy to claim it’ll protect them from child predators and yet Roblox isn’t banned?
I totally support this ban, the tech companies are totally unregulated or refuse to be regulated. Allow teens to have. just an ordinary phone capable of making phone calls, and text messages. That is all one needs to be safe in Emergency Circumstances.
Should ban money infiltrating politics.
I think social media should be treated like a drug, because it is terribly addictive and especially damaging for children with their Brains still developing. I don't care about the so called "positive" aspects of social media because saying that is like saying "oh but alcohol helps people socialise and loosen up"…?? Just like alcohol ( which is 100% a DRUG! ) children are not old enough to deal with the potential dangers of social media, that's why I wholeheartedly support the age restrictions legislation…
It should be up to parents
Australia failing to parent their kids huh?
Hope that there are structural alternatives for the kids to avoid boredom. 😶🌫️
not the world's first social media ban, Nepal was
Think of the children! While wrecking privacy on the net.
Tech scrambling would not be necessary if they policed themselves. Applies to all countries.
Good, kids should be outside, not doom scrolling
Double edged sword
People can find new information for themselves, not curated by msm or government
But the kids are in fact becoming dumber with things like tiktok
Well done mate!!
Austrailia has it s head screwed on…
I salute them 👍
Possibly the best politicians who look out for their citizens 👍
Well done Australia leading the way against products that can harm young people (and many adults).
The issue is that these teenagers will be voters in a few years and this almost guarantees which way they will vote.
IF UKRAINE SEEMS IT CAN WIN, THEN KEEP FIGHTING. IF IT SEEMS IT CANNOT WIN, THEN IT SHOULD LOSE 20% OF UKRAIN'S TERRITORY IN EXCHANGE FOR A SMALL BUT INDEPENDENT UKRAINE WITH 800,000 TROOPS, SUPPORTED BY THE US, REDUCING THE DEAD,
– UKRAINE ACCEPTS RUSSIA'S DE factual OCCUPIATION, BUT DOES NOT RECOGNIZE IT ON PAPER
– IF THE CEASE-FIRES, THEN UN PEACEKEEPING TROOPS SHOULD BE REQUESTED TO KEEP PEACE IN UKRAINE
more kids will just find ways to connect to social media. Just like the olden days where Rock and Roll/D&D/ Drugs and Alcohol were banned by Politics lol
Huge respect to Australia's government and people for this. Boldest most impressive move a government has made against these tech giants. It gives me an iota of hope for the world.
Just watch the news instead, this presenter is fit as …
Well a full grow adult just lost a channel that was active for 8 years🙄 hows that helping 16 year olds and under.
But the parents wont do anything to keep them off. Terrible. Parents should think ahead and know this is a real life problem. Online life is real life
Great. Maybe they will go out and touch grass now. US should be next.
This isn’t about protecting kids, it’s about more surveillance for everyone on the internet.
100% Agree, wish UK would also comply, this regulation should have been in place from the start, 16 is a sensible age, 13 is much too young.
