Synopsis for “The #1 Worst Protein in the World!”
In this eye-opening video, Dr. Eric Berg unveils what he claims to be the worst protein source on the planet: textured vegetable protein (TVP), derived from soy. He critiques the EAT-Lancet planetary health diet’s push for reduced red meat consumption, highlighting how they promote TVP as a healthy alternative. Viewers are taken on a journey through the alarming processing methods of TVP, which includes the use of hexane—a solvent linked to gasoline—and concerns about residual heavy metals like arsenic and lead.
Berg explains that the ultra-processed nature of TVP involves multiple chemical additives, including sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide, which alter its makeup and appearance. Despite being marketed as heart-healthy, this soy-based protein could have detrimental effects on health, particularly for those with thyroid conditions due to its estrogenic properties.
Berg’s passionate critique encourages viewers to rethink their choices about protein sources, urging them to consider the potential dangers of highly processed foods disguised as healthy options. Don’t miss this critical insight into what might be hiding in your food!

The EAT-Lancet planetary health diet aims for a plant-based world where red meat is replaced with plant-based protein. Surprisingly, the one protein you should never eat is plant-based!
So what’s the worst protein in the world? Here are 11 facts about one of the most dangerous protein sources:
1. The industrial extraction of defatted soy flour involves fat removal from soy flour using hexane, a component of gasoline. This ingredient is considered GRAS, or generally recognized as safe. This is a legal loophole that allows a company to classify its own product as safe.
2. This ultra-processed protein is a byproduct of the soybean oil industry.
3. It contains heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, and lead.
4. It’s thermo-mechanically restructured, which means high temperatures and machinery are used to restructure the product so that it mimics the texture of meat.
5. This product makes around $1.39 billion per year.
6. It’s marketed as healthy and has been around since the 1960s.
7. It contains sodium hydroxide, which changes the pH, chemically altering the protein.
8. It contains hydrogen peroxide and titanium dioxide used as bleaching agents.
9. It’s composed of sponge-like chunks of artificial meat that’s rehydrated with additional seed oil.
10. Artificial flavor and color are added to mimic the taste and appearance of meat.
11. The protein is dried at around 347 degrees Fahrenheit, so by the time you cook it, it’s been heated twice.
The estrogenic effect of soy is not destroyed by heat!
The protein I’m referring to is textured vegetable protein, made from the “vegetable” known as soy. This highly refined, ultra-processed protein contains heavy metals and is GMO, so it may contain traces of glyphosate.

There is an agenda at work behind the scenes Dr. Berg and I think I found the source.
Keep up the incredible work man.
The healthy hippies were right years ago. Now we're eating the way we made fun of 10 years ago. There was even a time I jokingly told my healthy eating friend that my body loves perspectives and ingredients we can't pronounce because it makes my immune system stronger. 🤣
I had a stroke 2 years ago and now reading labels and eating healthy to keep my type 2 in remission. 😒
I’m guessing, this stuff is the filler in pet food.
I'd like to say that I've watched Dr Berg for years and have great respect for him. I was on Keto from 2015-2024. But from what he says here about processed soy, I switched to WFPB diet, which is plant without processed foods. Go watch "Forks Over Knives" to see the tons of studies using millions of people in China and examples when meat was taken away in Europe during WWII how deaths and disease greatly improved until they had their meats back and they spiked again, and lists the unhealthy iron in red meat and what the saturated fat does in your body. I've come to believe Keto hides the symptoms of diabetes by keeping the sugar out of your system but while clogging your system with fat (a temporary band-aide). But a WFPB diet fixes the underlying problem. I was indoctrinated with all cliche's of how Keto helps you too, and have watched hundreds of videos and books on the subject. And my A1C went down until you go off of it just for a little bit it shoots back up higher than for someone who was NOT on keto. While WFPB diet lowers the spikes naturally, and you don't have to go through the keto flu if you miss a day traveling or something, and drink salty brines to get your electrolytes. There's another video where it shows injured athletes on the WFPB diet heal faster and have healthier blood results across the board. I still have deep respect to Dr Berg and watch his videos regularly, but it's hard to argue with the giant studies, and the blue zones of the world where people live the longest are on a Mediterranean diet or WFPB. I will still always watch Dr Berg because I love his level of detail at the biological/chemical level but I would suggest at looking at other information as well and be willing to hear something besides what you already believe to grow.
The vegans love the idea of this textured protein😂
Yay! More meat for the rest of us. The meat haters taking themselves out of the gene pool. Where is the problem? Seriously though. I get my protein from forest goats, home grown chickens, and fish from the Roanoke River. Soy? I don't eat no stinkin soy!
I was once on a ketogenic diet for years and my body was seemingly happy and healthy. I get that most plant based proteins are not complete sources of protein. But what many people aren’t aware of is that animals don’t have soul contracts to be our food source. Most of them suffer horrible deaths. Animals have feelings. The way they are corralled is immoral and unethical, also causing parasites. Free range is a term that is used loosely. My final point- we are consuming dead animal flesh, this lowers our frequency and causes us to age. While I agree with most of what you share, I can’t get behind this completely.
You are a blessing to humanity Dr Berg thank you 🙏🏽 you don’t look a day over 30 God bless thank you
Usually I like you, but this video gets a down vote from me for many reasons. One, the fact that something is ultra processed is a red flag, but not a conviction. This video is absolutely full of “may”. Does the hexane evaporate? You say it may destroy nutrients. Does it?
My main gripe, though is that you say you’re comparing it to bacon and sausage, but then you never actually do. I will go as far as to say that this video is just fear mongering. Almost no actual science in it, mostly just fears and speculation. also, I don’t buy for a second the fears about soy and estrogen. Of all of the natural plant food humans eat, the absolute only one that people are told they must avoid and it’s superduper bad, just so happens to be the only one that is considered a meat substitute? If you wanna talk, red flags, that’s as big of a red flag as it gets. It’s a food that has been eaten in large quantities for thousands of years. Also, you’re conflating plant oestrogen with animal estrogen. They are not the same.
It’s fine to say that it’s highly processed and we should try to avoid processed stuff and maybe that it’s not as nutritionally sound as meat. Fair enough. But when you say it’s the worst protein in the world without actually comparing it to the meats you talk about is piss-poor science.
How is sewage sludge bad for fertilizer useage?
Great info, but the AI clips are really distracting.
Oh this was sooooo informative, Dr Berg. Sent it to my grandson; he's doing keto now and swears by your advice. I'm a retired junior high teacher; however, I'd give anything to be in a class room to share your vids…. bless you and your family..
Soy is a feminine estrogen. Man boobies.

As a chemist back in the 1980's, I once worked in a cotton seed and safflower seed oil (popular vegetable oils at the time) processing facility Quality Control Laboratory. I would collect oil and meal samples and then test them for residual oil, protein, free fatty acids, sodium hydroxide, color, and solvent. Sodium hydroxide was added to solvent extracted oils to reduce the free fatty acid level. A simple flash test was done on the refined oil that involved heating the oil and then holding a lit match above the heating cup. If it ignited/flashed then there was too much solvent. The standard at that time was just a flash, not any residual that remained in the oil. If they still do it this way, you can bet your bottom dollar that there is hexane left in the oil that isn't removable by just heating. I could tell you more stories about how the the refining of oil took place, but I'm getting long here. Let me put it this way: when people like Dr. Berg say that processed foods are not healthy, they're right! I've see it first hand from the inside.
They treat people like cattle, and so they feed people cattle food.
Its the best.
