Waymo’s Robotaxis Are Hitting Freeways | Tech Today: Synopsis
Waymo has launched an exhilarating new feature that allows its self-driving robotaxis to hit the freeways in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. After a year of rigorous testing with employees, everyday passengers will soon experience faster trips as these autonomous vehicles transition from surface streets to the open highway. The rollout starts with customers who have opted for early access, eventually expanding to a broader user base.
During an exclusive ride along the freeway near San Bruno, passengers can expect a seamless experience as Waymo’s technology navigates ramps, changes lanes, and maintains speed limits—all while offering a smooth ride. This marks a significant advancement for the company, which began its journey as the Google self-driving car project, focusing on freeway testing since its inception.
Waymo’s enhanced capabilities allow its cars to optimize routes based on real-time conditions like traffic and construction. The service area is also expanding to cover over 260 square miles, including rides to San Jose Mineta International Airport, with plans to include San Francisco International Airport in the near future. As Waymo’s autonomous technology evolves, it invites viewers to explore their feelings about sharing roads with driverless cars.

How does the cost of a Waymo compare to an Uber or Taxi? I'm assuming it's a lot cheaper since you're not paying for a driver's time. As the service expands further, I could see it becoming very popular if it maintains it's high safety standards. One thing that would be very interesting would be if you could get a subscription, like a phone plan, that included a certain amount of KMs a month for a certain fee… or something to that effect.
Has anybody noticed, two different channels are collaborating to make this video on Yt. This is new. 😮
This is going to be the future, no doubt.
Put this technology on those big 18 wheelers that go cross country 😅
good.airport access next please
Great "reporting"
Seeing too many problems still on surface streets. I'll pass.
As someone who is considering giving up driving due to my age, I like Waymo being available as an option. If it comes to my city it will add a much more viable option for me. The number of trips I take weekly means Waymo would be a huge cost savings over a car, insurance, gas, and expenses each month. I hope it succeeds.
Definitely need this in jamaica
Tesla, we still waiting . . .
Loving it 👌🏼
Wait. How can this be possible? Elon Musk claimed in a social media post that Waymo vehicles "can't drive on highways" due to their use of LiDAR and radar.
.
Driving on the freeway is totally different from driving on surface streets.
They could pay a guy in India a buck an hour to monitor a couple of taxis
Detroit becomes human warned us
Yeah, this is great and everything but it’s not cheaper than an uber so what’s the point? I’d rather give the money to a person who needs the money doing it as a job
No thanks, I like being alive
Any news on Tesla’s FSD? Still waiting for those 2023 robo taxis

I took Waymo rides every time I'm in the Bay area and LA. I'm a bit nervous about it being on the fast highways but I'm sure it will be very safe. So, I'll take Waymo to and from the airport the next time I'm in the West Coast.
These engineers are acting like we live in a rational society. I'm waiting for some of those taxis to boycott going out on these dangerous highways.
Tesla becoming a smaller dot in the rearview…
Obeying the speed limit will be a problem.
Highly appreciated 🎉😢
Obeying the speed limit? These taxis will not survive here in Atlanta.
This will be hard to implement in the DFW area. A lot of highways that speed limit are 55 MPH but everyone goes 65-75 MPH. A car going the speed limit would cause an accident.
When will this be available in Europe? Waymo, come on, please convince the government to come to Europe. I mean, there are plenty statistics about how safe Waymo cars are compared to human drivers, maybe use that as an argument.
Can't wait to try it here in Europe 🤟
I would try it 👍💯
