Το Automatic for the People ήρθε σε μια στιγμή ωριμότητας — μετά το εμπορικό άνοιγμα με το Out of Time — και το “Man On The Moon” αναδεικνύει την ικανότητα της μπάντας να συνδυάζει νοσταλγία, χιούμορ και φιλοσοφία σε τρία λεπτά και κάτι.

Interesting sign in the truck stop @4:24: "There is nothing in here worth your life." A deterrent for burglars or acknowledgment of this matrix we're living in?
I think Andy Kaufman has pulled off one of the greatest disappearing acts (next to Michael Jackson and a few others….) in my lifetime.
Why am I insane? "Rolling the Steel Sheets"
Well. You're insane because you fashioned an entire empire out of rocks, trees, and animal parts out of a blacksmith's shop that perpetuates tools over time in a mad cycle. Nobody said the truth would be easy, but that is why many people consider you insane. It started with GIANT steel sheets, somehow rolled flat in a giant steel drum, like a jeweler's rolling mill or under a massive electric hammer. Which is insane. Truly insane. Yeah. Where is the steel sheet patent? Because, I've never seen it. Steel sheets don't exist. Apparently, there was the Bessemer Converter in 1857. Where have you been? Modern civilization is secretly due to the production of steel sheets, which before the 1900s wasn't available, and which, in turn caused the complexity in civilization that erupted in insane viewpoints. This is the single most important breakthrough.

Jim carrey gave me herpes on set of the man on the moon to this song.
Good memories.
When they found Kurt Cobain dead in his room, when he commited suicide, they find this song was playing over and over again in the room.
If men can get on the moon , me and my weighed ASD friendly cow blanket can get to North London. 🧳 🤠🐄🚖
Andy wasn't just the greatest heel in wrestling Elvis said he was the only impersonator he liked

My favorite song from them I still have the cd❤😊
So for the context of this song, Mott The Hopple was a 70s pop band Stipe was a fan of and Andy Warhol a producer of there's was in the New York scene when Kaufman started out.
The Wrestling Match for those who haven't seen the Jim Carrey movie or for Kaufman represents his years wrestling
Fred Blassy was Andy's hero and made a movie Breakfast on Pluto
Twister and Risk is about about love and the road you take in life
I'm not sure if see you in heaven if you make the list means if he's really dead he'll be there and questions he's not because he's alive or if there is a heaven at all.
The hearing about this one and the punch, obviously his wrestling and telling jokes
The Elvis lines are Kaufman being a good Elvis impersonator
Moses and Newton about the journeys and discoveries in life
Darwin is about the questions of how we're here
Not confirmed by the band but Truck stop might mean Andy is on the road traveling in disguise And the gone wrestling is about the end of his life or if he's playing a trick
And while not officially confirmed if you believe a man on the moon happened, maybe there's something out there.
Mott the Hoople and the game of Life yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Andy Kaufman in the wrestling match yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Monopoly, Twenty one, checkers, and chess yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Andy are you goofing on Elvis? Hey, baby
Are we losing touch?
If you believed they put a man on the moon
Man on the moon
If you believe there's nothing up his sleeve
Then nothing is cool
Moses went walking with the staff of wood yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Newton got beaned by the apple good yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Egypt was troubled by the horrible asp yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

If you believe there's nothing up his sleeve
Then nothing is cool
If you believed they put a man on the moon
Man on the moon
If you believe there's nothing up his sleeve
Then nothing is cool
Best R.E.M.'s song, for me. What's yours??!!
moon landing did not happen
I wonder how many people think Michael Stipe is a moon landing conspiracy theorist because of this song 😅
Never happened didn’t have technology
When I hear this I can't help but think of all those conspiracy theorist out there. They don't believe we ever went to the moon, they don't believe the Earth is oval shaped, but they Do believe the Philadelphia Experiment really happened and we're living in an alternate universe / reality !!
Andy Kaufman was good – he set-out to fire-up the crowd …. and he did just that on Saturday Night Live !!
I wasn't a fan of Latka Gravis though … doesn't mean he wasn't good in that role … just not my cup-of-tea !!
I love REM music since I started practicing it when I was learning guitar… I still fall-back to playing those songs … especially, this one.
That's my thoughts for the day ….
Have a Great Day Folks !!
