Southern Africa is currently facing its worst drought in a century, exacerbating the already pressing issue of climate change. As a result, over 68 million people in the region are experiencing severe food and water shortages. Zambia, which heavily relies on hydroelectric power, is particularly feeling the impact of this crisis, being able to provide only three hours of electricity per day to its citizens.
The Zambian government has taken steps to address this energy shortage by removing VAT on solar products in an effort to mitigate the crisis. Diana Zulu, a representative from the SolarAid charity in Zambia, sat down with France 24 to discuss the significant energy challenges facing the country.
As the country grapples with the limitations of hydroelectric power due to the drought, many are looking towards solar energy as a potential solution to fill the gap. This shift towards solar power not only offers a more sustainable and reliable source of energy, but also has the potential to alleviate the country’s energy crisis.
With the increasing prevalence of solar energy technology and the government’s efforts to promote its use, Zambia may be able to overcome its current energy challenges and provide its citizens with a more reliable source of electricity in the face of the ongoing drought and climate change impacts.

The only way I repeat only thermal power can help we have coal than sand in Zambia
Why y’all showing Rural Areas??
You guys should be serious
Wasn't she a BBC presenter this lady😂😂
Great post
To be honest, the load-shedding situation started in 2007 in Zambia. However, our country is only now implementing measures to encourage the use of alternative power sources such as solar and gas…. I feel we had enough time and it is too little too late 😢
Poor planning by the government
Those are stereotypical villages you are showing. Zambia is one of the most urbanized countries south of the equator in Africa.
Whoever gave you that footage lied and lies to you.
Lets be very clear. This mess cannot be blamed on drought and elnino let alone climate change. This is all about useless corrupt African government and a simple lack of hard work, planning and development.
In Zimbabwe they is no electricity problem
They announced 3 hours a day but in reality its actually 3 hours every 3 days. I literally dont know anywhere where they have 3 hours of electricity everyday. Sometimes we get morethan 3 hours, but we definitely dont get power everyday.
This is why it's stupid/dangerous for a African country to ignore using coal to develop. EU complains while bank's won't finance a when we try to invest into a 10% coal power plant to mix your power pool.
This is ultimately a legacy issue. Past governments should have been ahead of predicting future population growth/energy needs
It's actually 48 hours without power then 2:30hrs of power
This is embarrassing 😢
Is this an advert for Sun King?
Am surprised…drought its raining cats and dogs here….sorry Zambia and Zimbabwe
this is what they meant when they said, hear what i say not what i do, why show the rural zambia without electricity in such a report🤔🤔🤔
Why are they only showing rural areas when the detriment of this situation has impacted the capital city.
The SolarAid plug(member) is saying, "as we speak am in the dark"🤔 are you being serious😅
Our subsequent governments especially past ones never took energy seriously this is why we are in this crisis the past PF government looted the coffers empty
Days without power madam not 17 hrs
Zambian here and why do they always show the rural areas ? Middle income folk don't like cameras in their faces ? Is that even Zambia ?
