In a move that could escalate tensions between China and the European Union, EU member states have voted to impose import duties on Chinese-made electric cars. The decision, which was supported by a slim majority of member states, comes as the EU seeks to address what it sees as unfair trade practices by China.
The move has raised concerns about the potential repercussions of a trade dispute between the EU and China, two of the world’s largest economies. China has already indicated that it will retaliate against the EU’s decision, raising fears of a tit-for-tat trade war that could have negative consequences for both sides.
The EU argues that its decision to impose import duties on Chinese-made electric cars is necessary to level the playing field for European manufacturers, who have been struggling to compete with their Chinese counterparts. However, China has accused the EU of protectionism, and warns that the move could harm bilateral trade relations.
Experts are divided on how bad the trade dispute could get. Some believe that both sides will ultimately reach a compromise to avoid a full-blown trade war, while others warn that the situation could escalate further if tensions continue to rise.
One thing is clear: the decision to impose import duties on Chinese-made electric cars has the potential to have far-reaching consequences for both the EU and China. Both sides will need to tread carefully in order to avoid a damaging trade war that could have negative implications for the global economy.

Huge German and Dutch subsidies for their farmers!!!
Germany should join Brics. EU only limits n restricts it.
When blowback from China occurs EU will be complaining
China is largest market, what is EU thinking
When China has high volume of CO2 emission , EU blames China for risk of environment.
After China government put huge cost to build up capacity to produce cheap EVs for environment protection, EU blames the subsidy from China government on EV industry.
What is the logic behind?
As usual the German has it wrong.
Where the fxxking environmentalists lady hiding…stand out say some thing EU zero carbon emissions policy… Dont fxxking always bark on china….
😅fair bussiness
I'm surprised that this discussion is so insular, focused on what is happening in single countries in the EU. The global impact of the tariffs seems to be ignored; questions like can VW survive in China (that provides around 40% of the firm's profits) if the EU makes its firms unpopular with the buying public…… Essentially it sounds like EU has under invested in electricity distribution and has to fend off Chinses cars to slow the change.
It's not about fair competition..it is about politic and racism. You guys are hypocrites and double standard. Real disgusting!
Communist and dictatorship governments do not follow any laws, not even their own laws.
Not truth. How could a government support such a huge car industries of more than 400 car makers? Some of the cars makers are listed in the USA stock market. How come, China's national debt / GDP ratio is far lower than the USA, Canada and EU nations? You guys are big liars all the time.
But European governments funds their own industries …is that illegal or disloyal competition? Or is it just when someone else do it?
The Slovak car industry is a real giant. LOL As for the German chap = In a perfect world there would be no state involvement. Germany???? This has to be the most outrageous comment of the year.
This is a trade war of France against German car producers. It is that simple.
keeping several production lines.. combustion, hybrid and electric is also very expensive operation.
China is Russia best pal. Why are we having this conversation? China is an enemy. No more trade with China.
EU always double standard and double headed snake
A British anchor who tries to speak neutral/American, a Slovakian woman who speaks some out of space language and a German guy who rehearses his German speech so many times with Google translation in to English debate . Surprisingly they all understood each other. They mistook this little TV section with EU debate to disagree on nearly everything to promote their respective country's interest. This is so called a true Union
Maybe spend the money wasted on foreign wars to further support your own industry and businesses.
🩶US / America calls it "Liberation" instead of "Invasion". That was what US call it in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia and the list goes on… Why the double standard? Confused… Please enlighten. Genuine question…

Chinese have the upper hand. They can pick n choose any tarriff on eu exports to china..
China should tax all european luxury good. if they wanna discuss environment, just walk away. no pt talking to hypocrite
You can forget 1400 million customers. Send all overcapacity to US.
Come on, government subsidy on EV does not only exist in China but exists in almost every country including these EU countries. Why do these guy blame only China.
State aid, common agricultural policy is state aid for inefficient farmers.
The eu puts tariffs on income food that damage the third world specifically.
It’s fair to say all EU food exports are subsidised on a massive scale especially the French, so the Chinese need to ban all food exports from the EU.
China might as well slap tariffs on all agri products from the EU. Everyone knows agriculture is heavily subsidised in europe.
These import duties are a French protectionist project to keep the French car industry alive, unenthusiastically supported by Germany. The rest of the EU will suffer from the inevitable retaliation. In my opinion, France and its policies are the biggest obstacle to the European project, and this fiasco illustrates it once again.
France 24 debate is so boring. How is it a debate when both sides agree on the topic?
EU always shoot its own foot to impress opponents 😂 Same goes with Russia
total false
Traditional car is definitely over capacity but not EV.. when iPhone come to market will you say apple is overcapacity of selling iPhone… when everyone already have nokia
The Slovak MP is a complete mess in argumentation. She says was bad decision for Germany to close the NPP because now it buys nuclear power from France??? So it is the same regarding the primary energy source. And is not true because Germany continues to increase the solar and wind in the total mix. These Slovaks are like a "softer orban"
EU countries like France or Germany do neither directly nor indirectly subsidize their car industries? 😇😇😇😇😛😛😛😛🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
VW ID3 price in China (2023): 16.500 USD VW ID3 starting price in Germany (2023): 43.425 USD How about that for (allegedly) helping Your population "go green" or having a better, simpler life? Or just buy the car plus the solar panels for charging it for free? EU policies are about regulation and making money for governments – not about "going green" or helping europeans move forward.
The German MEP and in fact the EU commission should get their facts right first. China doesn't subsidize EV manufacturers anymore. The subsidies ended years ago. The Chinese government just subsidize consumers to buy EVs and this subsidy is open to all EV manufacturers like Tesla, BMW…. which sell EV in China. The objective is to stimulate demand as so many foreign media have chastized China insufficient demand.
Just stop buying from and selling to China.
Europe is strong.
Hope the lady can speak well Slovakian at least
Chinese EV are sensible Tesla alternatives. Tell me are there any European EVs that can match Tesla?
0:07 SAW IT COMING. NOTHING NEW. EU OLD HABITS FIRST ALLOW THEN CHARGE THEN FOR ALLOWANCE 😂😂
Probably nobody talks about that:
– the Chinese FM heard about the vote and went to Europe to talk about solutions, they proposed to raise the price, limit the number of cars exported to EU and more
– VW, Benz… also have factories in China and their products will also be affected by the tariff, therefore, the Chinese thought this can be a leverage to group with Germany
– EU went behind the back of the Chinese and made special deals with VW, Tesla, etc. so Germany will be back on the EU side
– Chinese were pissed and left, because they could not see the possibility to settle it
Europe, put yourself up. The Chinese was way behind you and now here they are. You can do the same. Get a new idea and invest in it.
This woman (Slovak MEP) completely lacks long-term vision!
The EU is being played by the US and the EU is blind to that fact. US don’t care about the European economy, the US only want to stay number one and they don’t care who gets hurt in that process. Fact is both Europe and China need each other to keep their economies strong. Just remember when the Euro Currency came out and how threatened the US was and how they tried to kill the Euro.
