A new report by the United Nations has revealed that the goal to eliminate global hunger by 2030 is becoming increasingly out of reach, as the number of people suffering from chronic hunger has remained virtually unchanged over the past year. According to the annual State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, around 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, with one in 11 people globally and one in five people in Africa struggling to access enough food.
The report highlights that conflict, climate change, and economic crises are the main factors contributing to the high levels of hunger in Africa and around the world. These challenges have made it difficult for communities to grow and access sufficient food, leading to widespread food insecurity.
David Laborde, Director of the agrifood economics division at the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, commented on the report’s findings, stressing the urgent need for action to address the root causes of hunger and ensure access to nutritious food for all populations.
As the international community grapples with the devastating impacts of hunger, it is clear that immediate and sustained efforts are required to address the underlying issues of conflict, climate change, and economic instability that continue to exacerbate food insecurity in Africa and beyond. Failure to take decisive action risks leaving millions of people at risk of hunger and malnutrition, underscoring the pressing need for global cooperation and support to combat this critical issue.
