In this video, we’ll take a look at why some people struggle with weight loss on the keto diet or experience a keto weight loss plateau.
To do the keto diet correctly, you must reduce your carb intake to 50 grams or less per day, especially if you’re working towards a goal such as weight loss, reducing chronic illness, increasing energy, or improving your health.
Avoid these 13 common keto diet mistakes!
1. Don’t do dirty keto, a low-carb diet that doesn’t eliminate unhealthy ingredients.
2. Poor sleep increases blood sugar values to those of a prediabetic. It also increases cortisol levels, inhibits the release of growth hormone, and reduces fat burning.
3. Stress raises cortisol levels, which blocks the benefits of keto.
4. Overtraining can stifle weight loss!
5. Gallbladder and liver health are vital for fat breakdown and absorption, and critical for proper thyroid function. You won’t lose weight on keto until you address these issues first.
6. Your thyroid is responsible for metabolism and energy. Focus on iodine, selenium, and zinc intake for a healthy thyroid.
7. Weight loss on keto starts with a healthy gut. Try L. reuteri yogurt to restore gut health and lose weight.
8. Not getting enough sun is one of the most common keto weight loss problems. Vitamin D protects you from insulin resistance, and sunlight increases melatonin and serotonin.
9. The more atrophy you have, the less keto will work for weight loss.
10. Make sure you have realistic expectations and an accurate definition of normal. After the initial water weight loss when first starting keto, weight loss will vary from person to person.
11. Pair the keto diet with intermittent fasting. Eliminate snacking and only eat when you’re hungry.
12. Avoid cheat day!
13. Lower your dietary fat intake if you’re struggling to lose weight on keto.
You may have heard rumors that the keto diet is dangerous, but this simply isn’t true and is often based on poor research.
Some foods labeled as “zero sugar” still contain carbs. Check labels and make sure your keto weight loss plateau isn’t caused by hidden sugar consumption!

Lost over 70 pounds on keto From 220 to 148. Maintaining 10-11% body fat. Easy Peasy! Blood pressure now sits at ~110/70. No more BP meds. No more arthritis. No more acid reflux. No more sore knees. No more allergies. No more cold sores. No trouble keeping it off either. Sometimes I have to remind myself to eat. I eat 20 gms. of carbs or less 90+% of the time and rarely go over 40. If you aren't losing weight on keto you're probably not really doing keto.
I'm overwhelmed, it seems like I have to live in a perfect world to make this diet work. I'm 64 years old retired and doing this diet for 6 years and have nothing but facing diabetes to show for it. WTH???
Can you give us a quick calculator for starch and carbs to sugar? Diabetes runs rampant in our family and i want to give our kids a quick lesson on sugars!! They think sugar is sugar. Carbs are carbs-etc.!!!
For a long time I tried being ~95% keto. I did lose weight but it was slow. When I fully committed the weight just fell off, that 5% made a big difference.
Doctor Berg , Do you have any advice or a helpful idea on Barrett’s Esophagus? Please help !

Atkins food is mostly SOY,which is terrible and whey,I’m allergic to Soy and CASIEN,good for me,I never tried them
My diet is great. I move my body everyday. But I don’t sleep. I just have not been able to sleep for 40 years. My dad is the same way. I know my life has been shortened due yo lack of sleep.
❤OMG❤
Through this video I got the answers I needed.
Fabulous!!!!!!
Prednisone is bad news. It's a steroid and should be avoided at all costs.
I can’t go keto yet but I’ve stared a gentle IF, 14:10 is enough for now. I overtrained and got heart problems and that affected my sleep and ended up putting ON weight
What is NAC please?
My sleep cycle is out of whack, because of work stress.
😂😂😂@"Not today buddy" on the scale.
So – symptoms of menopause…..high cortisol, inability to sleep, stress because of the symptoms and weight gain of menopause (catch 22) life is so unfair as a menopausal woman.
❤
I can totally relate to the struggles mentioned in this video! I started keto a few months ago and initially saw great results, but then I hit a plateau. It was so frustrating! I realized I was stressing too much about my food choices and not focusing on getting enough sleep. After making some adjustments, like prioritizing rest and managing my stress, I finally started seeing progress again. Thanks for sharing these insights; they really resonate with my experience!
Great video and topic. Thank you Dr Berg
My issue is lack of sleep.. only get 4-5 hours a night then crash one day.. I don’t feel tired during the day
😅😅😅😅 are you sure you will reach high age doing your studies?
❤❤❤
I had severely low iron in perimenopause and felt like nothing could work. I was exhausted so easily yet sleep was bad because of the feeling of having heart attack. I began taking Standard process iron and real Vutamin C and got all my energy back so I could finally take care of the rest. Fasting is HUGE on keto. I’ve learned that lesson. Thank you for all you do to help us when the other professionals can’t/won’t.
You look really sharp in that shirt, Dr. Berg! 😊
How do I find out what my bile, gallbladder and liver are up to?
I have been on clean keto for 6 months or so and losing a pound or 2 a month (apart from a 2 week period where I lost 4 poinds a week) and I was also recently diagnosed with Hashimotos about 4 months ago. I've been on a medication since and have seen no change in my weightloss. Still losing a pound a week. Should I be concerned?
