The sago crisis in Indonesia | DW Documentary
Children are particularly affected by large-scale deforestation in Indonesia. The indigenous people are suffering.
For centuries, the people of South Papua have observed a healthy tradition. Several times a day they ate sago, a starch extracted from native palm trees. Sago is one of their main staples, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to get: forests are being cut down as a source of green energy. And this has consequences: indigenous people are suffering from malnutrition and children have stunted growth. This is because the rice preferred by the government isn’t a good alternative for the indigenous communities. A report by Rizki Nugraha.

Indonesian Government making Papua more and more poor, their promoted consumerism culture to people of Papua. Papuan rich with their land, forests, and rivers.
How can we judge, we don't know what they want
I'm missing information about how eating sago instead of rice would solve the malnutrition issue. What is the nutritional value of sago compared to rice, and why isn't it possible for the people to meet their nutritional requirements by eating something else than noodles alongside the rice. Is it lack of information, lack of funds, lack of availability of other foods?
Replanting sago, coconuts, and cashew nuts is the best way to begin the process of "education," and a combination of "sea water hydrogen plant" could be added
FreePort stole their natural resources
These poor people are smart to see the problem and still bring children here to suffer. The evil poor people.
That company is in South America too. Greedy people are the problem. If only we listen to natives we could live a better life.
This documentary seems to be sorely missing the substantiation through studies of the empirical difference in health outcomes and economic sustainability between indigenous foraging versus subsistance farming. While Indigenous foraged trees for food in the past, portraying that way of life as if it is ideal and desirable for all the people of papua is disingenuous. That indigenous people all want to live in the forest and subsist from there forever without interference from the state is in a way its own tokenization and perpetuating the European myth of the "noble savage". Indigenous people want what the rest of modern society has they want to go to hospitals and schools. There needs to be a real discussion on what modernity means for indigenous people, without this disingenuous manichean portrayal of old traditions good and modernity bad, or people from the global south will assume the worst of your intentions. Disingenuous intentions like, after brutally colonizing indigenous people for centuries, Europe for its own economic interests starts saying that their former colonies shouldn't industrially develop and stay poor so they release this kind of propaganda. I'm disappointed in DW.
Heartbreaking, Javanese Indonesians should empower Papuans, not steal from them
Oh thank God a small attention to the indigenous at last. 😢
Dw has forgotten that climate change effect all of us. If the don't use the modern technology they will be affect the most.
Superpower Indonesia. No amount of problem affects Indonesians. It is Superpower 💪🏻
