Massive blast rocks Beirut as Israel targets Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah

A massive blast rocked Beirut today as Israel targeted Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah. Huge plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the Lebanese capital after the Israeli Defence Force fired a series of rockets into the city. The IDF claimed it was aiming at Hezbollah’s headquarters, but it is uncertain whether Nasrallah was present at the time of the attack and if he survived.

Following the strike, the IDF issued warnings to people living in parts of the southern suburbs of Beirut to evacuate their homes, hinting at a possible ground offensive in Lebanon. Iran, a staunch supporter of Hezbollah, condemned the bombing as a dangerous escalation.

The incident occurred shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a speech at the UN General Assembly in which he expressed his determination to continue fighting, disregarding US calls for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. Netanyahu’s defiance has raised tensions in the region as the conflict between the two sides escalates.

Reporting from Beirut, Anna Foster presents BBC News at Ten with insights from Hugo Bachega, Tom Bateman, and Jeremy Bowen. The situation remains fluid as Lebanon braces for potential further conflict in the wake of this latest attack.
