WHO Calls on Rwanda to Eliminate Marburg Outbreak • FRANCE 24 English

The World Health Organization (WHO) is urging Rwanda to continue its efforts in combatting the Marburg outbreak, as the country faces one of the deadliest viruses known to man. The outbreak, which was first revealed in late September, has resulted in 62 confirmed cases and 15 deaths.

However, there is some hope as no new cases have been reported in the last six days, with 44 individuals having successfully recovered from the infection. This progress is a testament to the dedication and hard work of healthcare professionals in Rwanda.

Marburg virus disease is a severe and highly fatal disease, similar to Ebola. It is transmitted to humans through contact with infected fruit bats or through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, and tissues of infected patients. The virus causes severe bleeding, organ failure, and often leads to death.

The WHO chief’s call to action serves as a reminder of the importance of continued vigilance and preparedness in the face of public health emergencies. Rwanda’s response to the Marburg outbreak has been commendable so far, but it is crucial for the country to remain vigilant and maintain efforts to contain the spread of the virus.
