Syria’s Kurds face a new challenge in maintaining control over the country’s east following recent developments in Deir el-Zour. The Islamist rebel group Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) has reportedly seized the key city from Kurdish forces, further complicating the already complex situation in the region.
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the US, had taken control of Deir el-Zour from government forces just weeks before HTS’s advance. The city, known for its oil production, holds strategic importance in the region.
The SDF, a coalition of Kurdish, Arab, and other ethnic fighters, emerged during Syria’s civil war and played a key role in the fight against the so-called Islamic State. With IS largely defeated, the Kurdish-led forces have come to control significant territory in the northeast, establishing an autonomous region.
However, the Kurds face challenges from various fronts. Turkey, a longstanding adversary, views them as an extension of the Kurdish separatist insurgency and the PKK. HTS’s recent takeover of Deir el-Zour signals a new threat to Kurdish control in the region, with the group expressing intentions to advance further east across the Euphrates river.
To gain insights on the situation, Middle East analyst Giorgio Cafiero provides his perspective on the latest developments. The shifting dynamics in Syria’s east raise questions about the future stability of the region and the Kurdish presence in the face of opposition from multiple factions.
As the conflict continues to evolve, the fate of Syria’s Kurds in maintaining control over their territory remains uncertain. The struggle for power and influence in the region persists, with implications for the broader geopolitical landscape in the Middle East.

It's hilarious how Westerners reject Syrian national will and want to divide them just because they want a loyal pawn to do their bidding.
Agawan na sila.pra sa kpangyrihan
kurds lose again
I hope Israel helps them. And i hope Erdogan will finally be replaced.
You can see Turquie are the ones behind this.
The kurds dont deserve this, please help them.
Спасибо ВСУ за пропавших без вести орков! Луганск с вами!
Kurdistan ❤ zindabad,, Balochistan siryab road hazagangi 🇵🇰🇵🇰
Syria is one isn't 2
Always the Kurds were betrayed by the US
Nice now its Islamiststs vs Kurds vs Turkey there. Peace got finally restored.
Where were the invincible YPG women fighters 🤣
If Syria gets a peace it strives, it is economic will stabilise as it's agricultural domestic production is reliable and it is citizens are highly educated.
Still no one has touched the Assyrians and Armenians, is HTS sleeping?
Turkey is behind. US and Israel will lose if Syrian Kurds defeated.
The SSG (led by HTS) didn't "seize" Deir Ez-Zor. Rather, the DZMC (Deir Ez-Zor Military Council) defected from the SDF and joined the New Syria government.
Syria have super good olive oil and honey 🍯😊
US-backed Syrian Kurds seize eastern city of Deir el-Zor 5 days ago. But today Turks backed radical Sunnis took control the city chasing away US and Israel backed groups. The terrorists do have now oil fields, too and Turkey will get it all as it was the case in Iraq after Sadam. Erdogan is the biggest Problem for decades.
There must he only one Syria under one government
No, without the U.S. support the kurds are screwed…
That's what happens when you allie yourself with the U.S.
You have thousands of Kurds in Germany and you invite a man whose name is Giorgio to comment on current situation in Syria? What are his competences? Is he even speaking kurdish or arabic? Is he able to read anything in these languages?
UN needs to remove Palestine from the UN and declare Kurdistan the boundaries of which are clear!
Please make peace with the kurds
Maybe the European Union, should seize the opportunity, to aid the Syrians, and help them in this last few hard step towards a better safer life in the region. So why not ask them if we can help and request them to think about a future, with the EU help. To maybe become a future member state. A foothold in the region. With Syrians for Syria, and not all fractions fighting the next coming episode? So many Syrians sought help and refuge here. Why not hand them this option? Help them, ask them? Offer them? If we do not it will either stay fractured and beaten, or another Iraq. Etc. We need to offer them help and help to restructure. Find their way, and maybe offer them to join us ahead in time. Please do.
Those are not rebels. They’re Al Qaeda.
Kurdish factions, instead of helping the rebels in toppling the regime, they took over more non-Kurdish land and even oil fields and military bases. They have 0 interest in Syria they want nothing to do with Syria, they only care about themselves.
Deir al zor isn’t even Kurdish
And that's the same pkk Germany/EU supports to carry out attacks inside Turkey.
All that talk about "right to exist" when it's for Israel, but not for many other people including the Kurds.
By the way will the rebels fight Turkey in the north and Israel in the south in the name of "one Syria" or everyone will persecute the same group again and again ?
