Battling high rents and gentrification in Silicon Valley | DW Documentary
Activism has a long tradition in East Palo Alto, in the heart of Silicon Valley. Now, residents are joining forces to resist the digital giants and real estate sharks threatening to drive the poorest out of the area.
Journalist Fabien Benoît met the residents of East Palo Alto; people who have formed an alliance against Google, Amazon & Co. to stop rent hikes and evictions and protect their multicultural neighborhood from gentrification.
Laura works as a cleaner. Antonio studies at Stanford and comes from a low-income family background. He’s been elected to the local council, where he gives a voice to his neighborhood and his community. Ofelia is one of a group of young residents. During the coronavirus pandemic, the three activists started to push back against what they describe as “capitalist colonization.” They continue to campaign for those who’ve missed out on the economic miracle of the tech industry that’s sprouted up around them.
With their activism and creative methods of resistance, the residents of East Palo Alto inspire others to think about the world of tomorrow. They also show that it’s possible to stand up to the Internet giants.

Most people thanks big technology companies.
Broke Losiers, glad I took all my wealth and left the bay.
41:18 she will finally see what she is really up against 😅
Life in the bay area is cheaper than any major city in Central Europe. Salaries are higher and the taxes are lower. None of the nazi garbage also.
Priced out.
The sellout who soon would become Mayor after having sold out his base.
Where is my Latino community from south and central AMERICA
We been AMERICANS , this gringos skipped history class
Lots of black peoples lived there generational families. They started buying people out over 20 years ago
It is very difficult to feel sorry for Laura's son, whom he has 5 kids and complains he can barely afford rent and may have to move out of the area. There is a lot of that type of ignorance here in the SF bay area; kids are not free, they cost money. Why have so many kids when you can barely afford rent? Why do people continue this lifestyle? We see this all the time, local news teams interviewing parents with several kids; one couple lived in a motor home type vehicle with 2 young kids, and mother pregnant again with a third. They complained they had to move out of their one-bedroom apt because they couldn't afford rent. Yet they bring another kid into the world? No sympathy.
The average rent for an apartment in San Francisco, Ca is $3,313 per month.
The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Anchorage, Ak is $1,407 per month.
Look at Skid Row in the mist of cruel tragic Homelessness. You See. Big buildings being built up all around them….
Very interesting video, For me I must of moved 15 times or more I was born in Lincoln California move and move for years I been living in North Sacramento for 49 years now.
Techies will swear their industry isn’t the problem, it’s people lack of ambition 😂
I’d rather live in East Palo Alto than Daly City.
You’re an illegal citizen it’s really not your land. Become legal and buy the house.
Asian People are too busy going to School & Working to Complain…. And others wonder why their getting passed over…
You can live a decent life in the Bay Area as a Registered Nurse.
FYI that everyone in this video who owns a home is a millionare who became rich as a side effect of Facebook and others moving in nearby.
This is just rich people pulling up the ladder behind them
28 and 5 kids and you want to know why you can't afford rent? maybe wrap it up so you don't breed anymore. you will be poor the rest of your life.
Forget apartments, most of the Vietnamese community has resorted to renting bedrooms from those lucky enough to have bought before prices went up.
That tech bro that law to become a city Council member is complete trash. He’s literally saying that if they become displayed because things get more expensive in their community to just let them develop and get out of the way that is such carelessness and disregard The people in that community. You have to fight these people tooth and nail otherwise they take everything from you.
A bunch of non-americans took over and pushed out another black american community. Now they want us to feel sorry for them getting displaced. It was never a problem until it affected the mexican community, now all of a sudden were supposed to care?
I sympathise, but there really is no need to have 5 kids!
Let’s be honest, the government is the real problem. Taxation. The current model of property tax assessment. There is absolutely no problem with improving a neighborhood with refurbished or new construction housing.
The problem is the model of property taxation. If one section of a community gets improved, it unfairly affects the taxation of adjacent poor sections. Which drives those people out.
Stop blaming developers and corporations and blame the people you elected.
