The nation mourns the loss of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29th at the age of 100. Today, a state funeral for the beloved leader will be held at the Washington National Cathedral. President Joe Biden, who will deliver the eulogy, has declared January 9th as a national day of mourning in honor of Carter’s legacy.
Following the funeral service in Washington, Carter’s remains will be transported to his hometown of Plains, Georgia for a private funeral service and interment at the Carter residence. The U.S. Navy will pay tribute to Carter’s service by conducting a missing man formation flyover.
President Biden will be joined by former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump at the ceremony. Vice President Kamala Harris, who delivered a eulogy at Carter’s lying-in-state, will also be in attendance. Other political figures expected to pay their respects include Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, Republican incoming Senate majority leader John Thune, and Democratic congressional leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer.
The funeral is a somber occasion, as the nation comes together to honor and remember the life and legacy of President Jimmy Carter.
