Rebels in DR Congo reportedly capture most of Goma

In a shocking turn of events, rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo have reportedly seized control of much of the city of Goma after days of intense fighting. The M23 rebel group, led by Tutsi forces, has clashed with the Congolese army and its allies, leading to the capture of key areas within the city.

Accusations have been made against neighboring Rwanda for backing the rebel group, although Rwanda has vehemently denied providing any direct military support. In an effort to end the conflict, Kenyan leader William Ruto called for a virtual summit to be held between DR Congo President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame. However, Tshisekedi has decided not to participate in the talks, as reported by state media.

Despite the absence of Tshisekedi, Rwanda has confirmed their participation in the summit, although it remains unclear whether President Kagame will be in attendance. The situation in Goma remains volatile, with the rebel group’s advancement causing concern among residents and international observers.

The capture of Goma by rebel forces marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in the region. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and efforts are being made to bring an end to the violence and restore stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
