Lucy Dacus explores the Barnes Foundation & the art behind “Forever Is a Feeling”
ARTnews recently joined Lucy Dacus on a walkthrough of the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, one of the singer-songwriter’s favorite museums.
Art figures heavily into Dacus’s newly released album “Forever Is A Feeling,” starting with the cover—a Renaissance-style portrait of Dacus painted by artist Will St. John.
Of the album’s 13 songs, the most overt art historical reference is the track “Modigliani,” which was largely inspired by visits to the Barnes. “Modigliani melancholy got me long in the face,” Dacus sings, referencing the elongated proportions of the Italian painter’s portraits. Dacus also draws inspiration from Chaïm Soutine and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a painter she’s admired since middle school.
