NATO in transition – Are Germany's NATO troops prepared for the future? | DW Documentary
Are the German armed forces prepared for the challenges of the future? With the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, German defense policy arrived at a so-called “turning point”. But can it succeed?
The German army is facing enormous challenges: It has too few personnel, too little equipment, too little budget. And, for many years, it was not geared towards the kind of war for which it must now prepare. Namely, a possible defensive war within its own national borders, as well as the capacity to fight alongside NATO partners in the event of an attack on a NATO member.
The film explores this dramatic upheaval, from the perspective of the people who must shoulder the task of “national and alliance defense” in their everyday lives, within their units.
Yannick recently started training in a new tank. Samira is a recruit – one of a group the German army is desperately looking for. Andreas pilots a 30-year-old reconnaissance aircraft along NATO’s eastern border. Joachim is a lecturer and is supposed to make sure that his soldiers understand what this “turning point” means for them. Three male soldiers and one female soldier are the focus of this film.

21 century:
Germany is a pillar of democracy and human rights
Ruzzia: the fascist dictatorship
Yawn
Modern Germany is so soft and comfortable…..too comfortable. Modern young Germans know their rights; but not their responsibilities.
As if Putin would ever start a (conventional) war against the EU.
This is not WW2 world have changed a lot
Your enemy is only politicians, not other countries. Because politicians cause of chaos in your country.
The Founding Fathers in the U.S. Constitution looked at this very issue: How to get people to defend their nation with their lives? Their answer was the 2nd Amendment: A militia. A militia is different than a military. A militia stays at home to defend the homeland from invasion while a military goes abroad. A nation can have both a militia and a military. The U.S. has twisted the meaning of the 2nd Amendment to be the "right to own and bear/use arms" but that is not what it actually says! I believe Germany could adopt the concept of a militia for its people in a way that is compatible with German values without going down the "gun rights" path that the U.S. has wrongly taken nor fall back into nationalism.
Germany needs to update their uniforms, to more stylish, modern ones. Cool looking clothing gives confidense and proudness. Especially wearing in public. This will attract more people to join. However, currently german uniforms are probably worst looking throughout whole NATO countries. Must change :S
Be ready because Ukraine ain’t surrendering
What Ukraine?
R.i.p samira
German tanks are far better than Russian tanks. German artillery is far better than Russian artillery. German infantry training… Far better. But all of that doesn't matter much when one side has a much better ratio of drones to soldiers, and when drones are responsible for 80% of casualties.
NATO remember afganistan
They don't even have the slightest idea what a real war is.
👍
Samira complained about standing 30 min in heat . 😅 Vermaht troops were build different….
They were at one time, they better find it…
Germany is not N@ZI anymore, that is why EU looks up to this Cenral EU nation……
Stand PROUD! 👍
(Please!, not too much flak) 😂
Germany needs to upgrade it''s military ASAP……🤔
(We know what Putiin is up to…)
Dont get “too” prepared please
Little soldiers against hypersonic missiles. Go Germans!
If Germany builds up its army, will it be dependent on Washington's influence?
Donald Trump will becomes new Natzi of this modern world order.
Drones… They are a nightmare
I wish them all well, and hope they stay safe.
Germany should remilitarize itself but at the same time leave NATO because NATO is a bulwark of globalist power.
08: 40 Get a suit, and stop teaching Lithuanians about freedom.
A very important aspect of the theoretical remilitarization of Germany. To breathe the Spirit of Militarism into people again. But there is a catch, if this is done, then the policy will immediately shift to a not very politically correct side. I wonder how the current left-liberal Germany will do this) otherwise, Allah forbid, they will have to call up immigrants for service. And an important question. Will the "Germans" be lucky in the third world war?
Russia will destroy NATO if they try anything. Ukraine war is showing different results.
looks like mools..
Tell alpha 1 to shut up and hold their position 😄
Auf der heide blüht ein kleines blümelein. . .
No, they are not. Thirty years of Germany’s woke agenda and chronic underfunding have crippled the military harming recruitment, training, and equipment readiness. Rebuilding a capable and professional force will take time.
Ich bin stolz auf meine deutschen Truppen.
Following the talk in the Russian media, they also describe their views and plans for Germany's future. Pre 2022, there was similar talk about Ukraine. So if the Germans would like to preserve their country as one nation within its current borders, they'd better get the Bundeswehr into a shape in which it is capable of directly engaging the Russians in the need arises.
