The psychological impact of a world in crisis | DW Documentary
Natural disasters and wars, each seemingly more devastating than the last. Are we becoming desensitized to this constant stream of bad news? And could that actually be necessary to help us stay functional amid global conflict and the climate crisis?
Are we growing emotionally numb to relentless negative headlines? Or is this emotional distance essential to keeping our survival instincts intact?
The human organism is equipped to handle negative stimuli, explains neurophysiologist Ursula Koch. In Amsterdam, communication scientist Dominique Wirz studies how emotions are processed depending on the intensity and frequency of media consumption. Meanwhile, frontline workers at Doctors Without Borders often manage high-stress situations more effectively than passive “doomscrollers” overwhelmed by the news cycle.
How can we respond more constructively to distressing news? And why are members of the “Psychologists for Future” movement calling for strategies to help us cope with alarming climate reports?
In this documentary, filmmaker Sören Senn – a self-confessed bad news addict – investigates how his own media habits affect his mental state and explores how we might rethink the way we consume difficult news stories.

DW reports a constant stream of overseas crisis's, so are they going to change? What use is hearing of a tragedy in a far off land which 99.9% of us cannot influence and doesn't influence our surroundings?
Don’t buy into this. One day you will wake up and realise that state funded media wants you to believe there is one crisis after another and the state is the answer. Don’t waste your life on this. Go and live it deliberately.
Its just sad that the bad news source is the one talking about this
i got illegal immigrant fatigue
Now, I understand why I want to leave the US to go and live in a quiet place in the woods far away from big cities and people in. a "peaceful country".
I am so tired of the frog in boiling water analogy. I must have heard it about 500 times in the last 2 weeks along. It's being used to describe EVERYTHING currently going on in the world.
It is interesting how you explicitly mentioned "Russia" as responsible for "attacking Kiev and other Ukrainian cities with renewed brutality" but forgot to mention who attacked the children's hospital in Gaza.
Actually, the frog analogy is not true; frog does notice the temperature change and jumps out on time, instead of being cooked alive.
Excellent journalism style… Curious inquisitive, and well presented by everyone ty.<3
of course we will adapt to the proclivities. as is the case throughout history, slaves built the pyramids in egypt, railroads in america. the majority seems to cater to the needs of the few without a second thought, mindlessly agreeing.
maybe one day we will only produce without the need to consume. food abundant but too expensive to buy in sufficient quantities, the 1% of our population must believe they are surrounded by pests
We developed in small social groups where the main driver of change were the gradual movement of the seasons. Go to the country and sit in a field for an hour and you'll really appreciate how slowly change actually occurs. This is the environment we live in for centuries. Compare that to how we no live and you'll see how absurdly over stimilated it is and how ill adapted we are to cope with it.
DW trying to dehumanize the deaths of innocent children and women of Gaza. . .
"Bombs in Ukraine & war in Gaza". Ukraine & Russia are state actors, & as such, that qualifies as war. In Gaza however, its a state actor bombing civilians populations in such great numbers it has been classes as a genocide. Without a corresponding army, Gaza can't be considered a war. More like ethnic cleansing or similar war crimes. Let's not dissensitize people's lives simply coz they aren't Europeans 😊
This is highest level of documentary. Danke DW❤
There is no such thing as “natural disasters” but “natural hazards”, please fix the terminology that you use.
The concept of "God" varies greatly across different belief systems, cultures, and philosophical perspectives. There isn't one single, universally accepted definition, but here's a breakdown of common understandings:
Monotheistic Religions
In monotheistic religions like Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (often called Abrahamic religions), God is generally understood as:
* A single, supreme being: The one and only God.
* Creator of the universe: The ultimate origin of all existence.
* Omnipotent (all-powerful), Omniscient (all-knowing), Omnipresent (present everywhere): Possessing infinite power, knowledge, and presence.
* Transcendent: Existing apart from and beyond the material universe, not limited by space or time.
* Immanent: Also involved in and present within the material universe, interacting with humanity.
* Personal: Often seen as having qualities like love, justice, and compassion, and capable of a relationship with individuals (e.g., through prayer).
Welcome to the third great depression 🎉
They will never admit it…
psychological warfare
Discomfort, uncertainty or even suffering is an inevitable part of life, it is important to remember that. It is not consumerism and hedonism.
Stop watching the news
Because the news contrives to frighten you
To make you feel small and alone
To make you feel that your mind isn't your own

Frog does jump out of the water. It has been proven now. So this metaphor no longer works.
Do one small good deed, and we will feel better. Chose a cause, help someone, that' s it.
When the ordinary man comes to the realisation that journalist are twisting the narratives to suit the interests of the west…..
Russia attacks Ukraine and becomes bad guy…..Israel attacks and starve Palestine and everyone turns a blind eye becomes a hero…….
A journalist need to call a spade a spade……
It's pathetic watching BBC, CNN, France 24, DW etc…… it's obvious they have an agenda to twist the narrative towards a world order.
I sometimes ask myself if these news casters and analysers have minds of their own?
I finally decided to stop watching such stations.
Grow trees, stop this climate change propaganda created by intelligence agencies to stop environmental activists
