Good luck in your search, don't forget to give consideration to one day sailing the great loop of North America, boats are limited to drafts of 5 feet, 20 foot beam and 80 feet length, but it is an amazing trip through small towns (and some big cities) in the US and Canada, and the North Channel of Georgian Bay is spectacular. There are many compatible expedition boats that can do open sea and inland waterways you might want to look at. I live near lock 32 on the Trent Severn Waterway in Canada and everyday I see some amazing boats come through, saw an amazing 75 footer/w 18 foot beam the other day from France, and an equally amazing Swedish flagged boat a few weeks ago, many boats from around the world visit and of course all the beautiful American flagged boats that come through every summer, keep it on your do to do list
I have no doubt you love the romance and idea of an old boat. I just doubt you will love the work of an old boat.
Back in '94, that's 1994 for the whipper-snappers, I rented an apartment on Oahu from a gentleman who had this
philosophy: Everything is negotiable.
A delightful outlook on business dealings. One of my truly best rental experiences, for living quarters. And a marvelous
mindset for life in general.
Nikki, Jason, happy trails or fair winds, whatever applies.
We exist vicariously thru your adventures, thank you.
It is the journey Grasshoppers.
You are not going to destroy the world if you have combustion engines. So I agree that you should get an explorer yacht. We want to see you guys back on the seas.
An aluminum expedition sailboat would fit so well.
Garcia 45 or their explocat.
Is it feasible to rent a boat?
Just one vievers 10 cents: I'd love you to stay sailing – I understand the "it's not gas guzzling" argument. But it is a different way of moving.
But whatever comes – The algorithm commended you to me because of vanlife. I was happy to follow you to boatlife (which is quite the YT-interest of mine). But by now, I think I would follow your channel on all kinds of journeys.
I get all your points. You two are experts in research! I just can't imagine going from a cat to a monohull. Talk about sea sickness! 🤢 It seems obvious you two are / were not interested in Ruby Rose II. Continued best of luck in your search!! Wishing you joy in whatever boat you end up purchasing.
I’m happy to hear that you’re staying out of the EV rabbit hole
In Northwest, check out Port Townsend, WA. if you need to haul out….and maybe even find a boat. Wood boats: once upon a time I had a solid teak gaff rigged that was supposedly made for a king…
Good luck in your search
don't buy another HH
An old boat…watch Sailing Yaba…
What about the expeditionary cat like what delos is doing? I assume there could be used ones but could be the long term plan vs whatever you want to do short term
Take your time kids. I’m enjoying the ride. You should make an episode with Leo Sampson😅
I think they’re making a mistake for their channel with the boat choices. They’re doing this as a business and to make money, it’s in reality not about what they want. It’s what the people who watch their videos want. People who are working in 9-to-5 jobs who can’t necessarily afford to go out sailing in paradise, but watch the videos for inspiration for the day their ship will come in and take them away on tropical adventures. I don’t think those niche boats are going to have that kind of appeal for a broad audience. Of course, whatever they choose is perfectly fine for them however, I think it’s going to hurt their business. There are already a couple of other channels that do the Arctic sailing and while it’s really cool, they have very few subscribers and they don’t make much money according to them. The money is really in the tropical cruising. Plus, if they struggled with that last boat, which was gorgeous and most of the problems turned out to be relatively insignificant and not what they thought it was. I can’t imagine based on how that affected them, Why they would want jump into a 100-year-old boat that will never not have significant maintenance issues in the pipe line perennially and an old boat like that will literally be a time bomb (anything serious could break at any time anywhere. There is a really cool channel already of a couple who sailed through the Arctic and they have really great video and it was really unique, but there’s not a lot of in the water stuff because the water is so cold. They have a great channel, but their subscription base is relatively low. And I watched it for a while but it gets kind of boring. It’s somewhat barren the Arctic The purveyor of the channel sells beautiful photographs he takes to supplement income. Don’t get me wrong those communities are very tight like for example there are a bunch of people who have explorer boats that are converted to luxury tugboats. They cost over $1 million and they have 900- 1,000 hp diesel motors. That doesn’t have the widespread appeal to our community of sailors and fans who watch on YouTube. I hope they test the waters out by chartering these types of vessels and seeing what kind of videos they can produce. And of course, I wish them success and satisfaction in whatever they decide to do. If I were them, I would just go out and get another really cool catamaran that is at least hull number 40 or up and pick up right where they left off. Bring the boat right back to the marina in the Philippines and restart the adventure- they could get 10 fun videos on that topic alone. I’m sure they would get a lot of viewers for that. Everybody likes a comeback story – the tale of resilience rings a bell with everyone. Like Rocky on the ocean ! In any event, , good luck guys
Buy a row boat and I’m still in. Love you both keep up the good work. Your content and chemistry are the best. ❤
I LOVE that you want to buy a boat again and explore the world
My myself is a catamaran lover….. but I would absolutely continue to follow your channel even if you buy a motor yacht.
But when it comes to really old boats…. NOPE…. not a chance I would buy that myself.
Yes, they might look nice etc, but actually…… when it comes to being completely fully functioning in literally every aspect of boat life, then new boats is completely superior to old boats.
So in the long run I would say that a new boat ALWAYS would win over an old one if one is to actually live on board for a long time, having it as ones home.
But that's me. Hehe! 😁🤗🩷
Netherland build steel hull boats one of the best
Hi I’m kind of wondering if you were to buy any other vessel what would the sale of such a bobber… could you be stuck with it long after !!!! Hummmm me thinks it is a hard re-resale. How about a rental vessel 🚢….. good luck folks
I would love for you two to find an explorer yacht that you could eco fit over time. The classics are gorgeous but so much maintenance and limited to mild coastal waters and conditions. I think that would be a great option after your adventures in an explorer. Just my thoughts 😊
Totally do the Explorer Yacht and then go back to a warm weather catamaran after 2-3 years! 😊❤
All the small Nordhavns are made of fiberglass.
You should consider a steel hull trawler yacht.
It's worth the extra cost for the peace of mind while dodging icebergs.
One problem with older vessels is replacement insurance it’s very difficult to find an insurance company willing to insure an older vessel other than liability insurance.
Really like your van, no-build, build.Glad you're keeping it. Very smart design
Looking forward to whichever decision you make, love your videos!
Consider a Fleming Yacht! Watch a few of their videos on line about his trips from Seattle to Alaska and back. He mentions fuel ,when he needed too fill and how much fuel he took on. It seems to be about ONE GALLON per Mile . Your HH is now a Used Boat and stray current free, likley big discount from New. CHEERS AND FAIR WYNNS Steve h.
Classic/vintage? You are out of your mind. 1000x the work. They eat you alive. For northern waters you need aluminium. For northern waters you need sail in a conservative rig. You need a used Allures or Expedition 45++. Garcia fit the bill completely. Minimise the electrical gadgets!!!! Use Dacron, not carbon, sails. Use only trusted gear. Period!
If there's anything that is clear after watching this video is that the plan is clear in your minds, as opposed to your mindset coming out of the Philippines. I'm happy for you guys.
fwiw channel wise, I have a hard time seeing the sexiness of sailing the cold climes long term. It's cool to see every once in a while but long term could be difficult to keep eyeballs coming back. IMHO.
And one more comment. You undertook the "have it your way" build that incorporated green technology (electric) and speed to minimize passage time which was the big problem with Curiosity I. Wood is good but has a shelf life and a cruising speed of 10-12 knots is a nice capability to have.
Sounds like you're not going to be getting another sailboat. I won't lie, that's disappointing. I've certainly fallen in love with sailing through the years watching y'all (and a couple other channels), and my wife and I even went to the same school you did and got catamaran sailing certified and fell even more in love with sailing because of it. But, I'll continue to follow and watch, just with a more measured level of anticipation. I do appreciate the update though.
Exciting update. Very different boat possibilities! If possible, check out the passagemaking vessels build by Steve Dashew. They are designed to travel in any weather at higher-then normal trawler speeds, in considerable comfort. Please do NOT buy a wooden boat! Headaches galore. Good friends were tootling along in the Bahamas when their wooden Huckins popped a plank and the boat sank in minutes. Imagine if you hit a log in the freezing waters in the Pacific Northwest in a wooden boat. Not good.
You guys loved Curiosity 2, until all the problems piled up!
I am so excited to come along for the ride in your new chapter!
Rental first to sus it out. Diesel electric hybrid maybe. 🤷🏽
Thanks for the update guys! As you know and as I have previously stated. I don't care what to do, just as long as you keep of doing 😀
It's too bad in the Nahoa 55 isn't ready yet
No no no old boats. Get that out of your heads.
An aluminum expedition catamaran. No you can't use it in heavy ice but it can be insulated for northern climes and warm climes. Of course something like that would need to be built.
You are looking for a boat. I'm looking for a miricle. I would like to see someone design a hybrid electric catamaran and practical electric amphibius car made from aluminum that modularly shares propulsion and navigation systems and is big enough to live comfortably on with full ammenities. This would be a highly technical challenge that would require some very special people to design.
Modern boat
Don't buy another boat, you guys are not meant to be boat people. The level of unrealistic expectations during your last build tell me all I need to know about your understanding of the marine environment. Trust me you do not need a boat because you are looking for a fantasy. I am a boat builder and deal with people's unrealistic expectations all of the time and it is very clear who should and should not be boat owners.
