Autism: Understanding the ‘spectrum’ | DW Documentary
For people with autism, recognizing a smile or enjoying a touch is often not possible. More and more people, especially children, are being diagnosed with “autism spectrum disorder”, a complex neurological condition.
Despite an increase in the number of people diagnosed with autism, many autistic people still remain undiagnosed. This is because autism is highly complex and can manifest in many different ways. Some of those affected can live lives similar to people without autism, while others require lifelong care.
The causes of autism are also a mystery. Scientists around the world are working to find out why the brains of people on the autism spectrum develop differently. This would help medical practitioners to establish reliable methods of diagnosis and effective therapies. The documentary explores what “living on the autism spectrum” means for those affected, accompanying autistic people in their daily lives and showing the challenges they face. It also follows two renowned autism researchers, Tony Attwood and Professor Ludger Tebartz van Elst, dispelling prejudices that many people have about autistic people. Because, as experts remind us, autism is a very diverse condition.

Bit confused as to why they don't touch upon any structural differences in the brain. Didn't see a CT scan or any information on such.
If you're a scientist then why would you only look at the outside and not what the internal differences in the brain are. Very bizarre. Oh okay, seems later in the doc they do look at it.
Is it just me..but it seems in the last generation or two this have become more of a prevalent condition? I hardly heard of all these names, autism ,spectrum disorder, ADHD, Autistic..
Is this some kind of "new" condition, or maybe its just expanded? What is causing this I wonder.
I have to repeat how ,much I appreciate this program because I have been waiting for such aa documentary
I had assistance in school from grade three til second year of high school, after that? I failed university, still got no job and don't have an official diagnosis 🙁
Absolutely outstanding documentary. I have always been facilitated by autism spectrum disorders. I never heard the report of autism from the inside.
I ignore all the complications of autism and just make sure my two boys are always happy jumping and smiling. I've also avoiding over thinking of their future without parents because this can be very detrimental to the parents because we love our boys. positive thinking is the way. my boys go out at least once a day to public spaces. when i hang out for a drink or food I always bring them…and the people who live around us will also get use to them. if I've financially improved then ill seek him for home school. the spectrum is such an irony where my sons were absolutely brilliant until they reach 2 years of age. I also noticed my boys are a lot calmer at home after theyve had their joy ride or time outside
Thank you for sharing this story. I’m autistic with ADHD. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 69. Very late. I’m grateful to know I’m not alone in this world with this condition. I personally don’t believe in my case that it is a bad disease to have. I’ve been able to function in ways many are not able to. I thank my curiosity to help me. For me it is just sad others that are not struggling with similar issues, don’t try as hard we do to please more normal people. Some day I hope others will understand this issue and provide safe environments for all humans. There has been a lot of violence against me. So I stay to myself and I am comfortable a lone. Unlike most other people. Bless you for speaking up for us. Most of us want some sort of acceptance by other humans. It’s just hard to find it. I’m hopeful though that eventually we will find ways to get by with greater understanding some day.
i try to listen but the german background voice with the english voice over makes it very difficult to listen to.
It is hard in countries where homeschooling is not permitted. This has been a lifesaver for so many!
I'm more interested to find causes of these increasing phenomenon.
Uhhg here we go again… the "autism spectrum" movement
Why do I get Tylenol ad ?
A symptom of Jacob's autism is that doesn't like doing things for no reason? Does anyone like doing things for no reason? If I'm doing anything I definitely want to know why if it's not obvious. This is completely normal human behavior.
Geez, I never thought I would see the day when the so-called experts understand.
not mentioned: tendency to have reduced empathy
Amazing love and dedication from parents of autistic children. Just be aware that meeting all their needs so rigorously can create a comfort zone. Kids are incredibly resilient, and they need gradual exposure to the chaos of the world. It might be painful, yes, but it’s full of lessons and eventually leads to independence.
29:00 how nice, autistic empathy
Sorry for aurtism 🌸🌸
Someone wanna do us a solid and explain epidemiology and multifactorial etiologies to the Trump administration?
Dont listen to JFK jr who knows absolutely nothing about anything.
This documentary is a fraud. Autism is a new ADHD, everyone is considered autistic nowadays😳
Autism and ADHD. Gen X here. The Lost generation. Resilient and self sufficient.
To the mainstream media, adults my age have it too. It's not just kids.
