Inside the Rise of AI Music: How Imogen Heap Is Shaping the Future | Billboard On The Record
In the latest episode of Billboard’s On the Record, host Kristen Robinson dives into the rapidly evolving landscape of AI in music, featuring the innovative artist Imogen Heap. As AI-generated songs increasingly dominate charts—from gospel to country—questions arise about authenticity and recognition in music. Heap, a Grammy-winning artist and tech visionary, has embraced these tools, developing AI Mojin, her own voice model, which adds a novel layer to her artistry. With recent successes like Zenia Monae as an “AI artist,” the conversation surrounding human creativity versus algorithmic production is more relevant than ever.
Heap shares insights from her two-decade career, reflecting on how she harnessed technology to enhance her creative process, including her groundbreaking Mimu gloves, which allow for gestural music creation. She emphasizes the need for clear regulations to distinguish between human and AI contributions to protect artists’ rights as the industry adapts to this new reality.
With the 20th anniversary of her iconic album Speak for Yourself, Heap’s journey serves as a lens through which we can evaluate the future of music in an age dominated by artificial intelligence. Tune in to discover how artists like Heap are shaping the dialogue on creativity, technology, and the music industry’s future.

i love imogen sm ❤
ive been waiting all week for this
Okay, as long as the artist is in control of the AI and owns their own voice and style. It's one thing when another artist is influenced. This is how art and culture grows. But a computer that anyone can get and that makes a perfect copy of an artist's style, voice, etc. That allows a person with no skills to create a piece that competes against the original artist in their own voice…That's different. That's not good.

I did not enjoy this.
"Art still matters if it resonates, no matter how it’s made" I agree with this 100%
I call Nashville, TN home. It has Andrew Jackson's hermitage and slave soul sounds.. "comin for to carry me home- Dolly will know that song. The trail of tears is now a busy area with stores, houses and restaurants. The music industry is difficult. Many time a male artist from East Tennessee with swag and tight jeans and 4 motes with bad lyrics is on the radio when others simply have to quit. Look at Nashville rich history but do not read its foolish paper who published the Clinton trial word for word. Hillary must have coached him.
Huge thank you to Imogen for coming on the show and talking AI with me!
Disappointing
