Lithuania’s Race to Prep for War on Russia’s Doorstep
As tensions escalate along NATO’s Eastern Flank, Lithuania finds itself at a critical juncture, caught between the geopolitical ambitions of Russia and the looming threat of conflict. Amidst low-grade attacks that have been ramping up, the Baltic nation has long been vocal about the dangers posed by its eastern neighbor, a warning that has grown increasingly urgent in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In the latest episode from The Wall Street Journal, journalist Matthew Luxmoore takes a deep dive into Lithuania’s strategic efforts to bolster its defenses and mobilize its citizens for potential war, highlighting the profound vulnerabilities the country faces. Sandwiched between Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave and Belarus, Lithuania’s geographic positioning underscores the urgency of its military preparations.
The video opens by showcasing the Lithuanian Rifleman’s Brigade, a critical component of the nation’s defense strategy. This volunteer force reflects a commitment to an integrated defense model, combining professional military personnel with civilian volunteers. This blend not only enhances military readiness but reinforces national unity and resilience.
As hybrid attacks become more frequent, Luxmoore sheds light on the multifaceted nature of threats Lithuania encounters. These low-intensity tactics, which can include cyber assaults, misinformation campaigns, and disruptive ground actions, challenge traditional notions of warfare and demand a robust and adaptive response from the Lithuanian government and its allies.
Civilian defense emerges as a key focus of the country’s preparations. Tailored training programs are being implemented to equip ordinary citizens with the skills necessary to respond to various crises. This initiative underscores a paradigm shift in national security: everyone has a role to play in ensuring the safety and sovereignty of their nation.
The urgency of these preparations is palpable as Lithuania ramps up its military readiness. With fears of a full-scale conflict looming larger by the day, the nation’s leadership is committed to ensuring that its armed forces are equipped and ready to protect its borders and deter aggression.
A significant point of concern remains the Lithuania-Belarus border, an area of strategic importance given the close ties between Belarus and Russia. As tensions simmer, this border not only acts as a physical barrier but also symbolizes the frontline in Lithuania’s defense strategy.
As the landscape of warfare continues to evolve, Lithuania stands as a microcosm of the broader challenges facing European security. The resilience and determination showcased in Luxmoore’s report serve as a poignant reminder of the stakes involved in this high-pressure geopolitical arena. Lithuania’s proactive measures may well set a precedent for other NATO countries grappling with similar threats, reinforcing the alliance’s collective defense commitments at a time when it matters most.

Glory to the Free People willing to resist Russian imperialism. Shame on the weak souls calling for capitulation.
FEDERATION RUSSIA 🇷🇺 PRESIDENT PUTIN ❤
This guys should look at the Chechen wars for their strategy. Almost forgetton now, but the Chechens did manage to pin down the Russians for a long time in Grozny. This could buy the Baltics time for the NATO reinforcements to arrive.
Greeting from neighbour Poland 😊❤
😂 oh russians why these european fears you so much
Imagine if russia actually became a normal, functioning democracy after the soviet union fell…
The Western Europeans have neglected their own responsibility for defense for too long, but those of the former Warsaw Pact – especially the Baltic States who were annexed by the USSR under Stalin – know full well the base instinct of autocratic imperialism that's historically woven into Russian foreign policy. I have no clue what Trump is trying to do with this ultimatum but I fear for US long term from credibility to domestic policy.
A new generation of rational leadership is needed. Rational leadership from a new generation grounded in the realities and understanding of the current set of circumstances facing our nation and the world at large needs to step up and lead with sober, ethical, and rational plays in foreign and domestic policy that leverage all of this countries blessings and set an example to be followed. The extremes on both sides of the aisle have been tried and found utterly wanting. I say this as an American but I feel that the same is also needed in Europe, although from what I can tell, the Ukraine War – and its most recent "Phase Zero/Hybrid War" – has finally given Europeans a strong compass bearing on what needs to be done.
I can only pray that the bad blood that seems to be oozing out of US – European relations right now can be healed, but I think it's going to get worse before it gets better. Trump acts like a jilted lover when it comes to Europe. :/
Greetings from Ukraine to our dear Lithuanian friends! I wish you will be powerful enough so Russia will never decide to invade your homeland.
One day will enough to Russia tbh
with all due respect, you wont last a week
I dont think EU is last-longing.. no army, no nukes
What war. Just throw out the deep state UK/US diplomats overplaying their hand and there wouldn't be any wars here in the first place
Yeah well good for them. I trust my baltic brothers. Greetings from Finland🇫🇮
EUrope needs to work together to defend against the threats that face it from the outside, russia is fighting both with weapons and with propaganda, they are doing everything they can to divide us and then conquer us, we cannot allow them
Play same game on Belarus and russia. Russia is bogged down in Ukraine and hybrid is all they have, outside of Ukraine….
Take notice, none of them are training with drones…
Россия справится
Most people in Western Europe and the USA have little idea of what the people of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania endured under the Soviets/Russians. These three little countries have been super good allies/friends to the USA, yet most Americans feel little obligation to them…..mainly because they don't know how much about these countries or how much these they have contributed to US security and that of Europe as a whole. As for counties in NATO not contributing, those are not these three NATO countries. For what little it is worth, they have my respect and support.
Why would you fear a Russian invasion? The media has been saying they are a paper tiger though. If they are a paper tiger, no need for these type of training. The real invasion is the Islamic immigration that is taking over Europe identity and culture not Russia. Fear mongering propaganda.
🇪🇺 Europe. Together. Strong.
Putin wants instanbul, this is all a tease and ruse.
Nuclear weapons are the only reason the world hasn’t had World War III. Mutually assured destruction isn’t pretty – it’s effective.
and yet in Germany, ppl crying about MAYBE mandatory military service! GO LITHUANIA, show us how is it being done!
Being so close to barbaric country like Russia is sad thing…. Good Luck to Baltic Countries !
Clowns)))
Does Europe want war? Of course.
17k 😂😂😂😂😂😂 russia could deploy 17k a day and eat Lithuania. Best to be diplomatic with putin otherwise youll become Loseruania
