ROBBED! How We Were Targeted by Thieves: A Cautionary Tale
In a shocking turn of events, Jason and Nikki Wynn, the adventurous duo behind Gone With the Wynns, found themselves on the unfortunate side of a robbery during their travels in Amsterdam. After more than a decade of exploring the world without incident, this experience marked a painful shift in their journey.
In their new video, “ROBBED! How We Were Targeted by Thieves,” the Wynns share their harrowing experience of being robbed while parked in what they believed to be a secure area. While attending the METS boat show—a highlight of their trip—Jason and Nikki parked their car filled with high-end camera equipment, only to return and find it had been broken into. The thieves smashed a window and made off with about $10,000 worth of gear, including precious footage that could never be replaced.
Throughout the video, the Wynns not only recount the details of this traumatic incident but also reflect on the lessons learned. They tackle questions about personal responsibility, the effectiveness of security in urban areas, and the unpredictability of theft. Their account serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and preparedness, especially when traveling in large cities.
The Wynns dive into the emotional aftermath, discussing the challenges of filing a police report and the unhelpful responses from the supposed security personnel of the parking garage. They also highlight the frustration of a legal system perceived to favor the anonymity of criminals over the rights and safety of victims.
In addition to cautioning viewers about securing their belongings, the Wynns advocate for proactive measures such as obtaining renters’ insurance—a safety net they regrettably lacked during this incident. Their experience sheds light on the importance of being prepared for the unexpected and considering practical options for personal safety and insurance.
Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or planning your first trip, the insights shared by Jason and Nikki in this video are invaluable. Tune in to gain perspective from their remarkable story and learn how to avoid such misfortune in your travels.

As someone who leaves a lot of equipment in my boot (trunk) overnight, I do appreciate that it can be stolen. I take my video camera from my large (and heavy) holdall and carry the bag that houses all my GoPros, their armoured frames and power banks back to my house. If my B roll camera is with me, I remove the SD cards and carry those in my pocket. The rest I trust to luck I suppose and my insurance agent if it were to be stolen. The reason I pocket the sd cards is that a client has paid for me to film so I need the data stored on them. Too many years covering weddings have taught me to be very careful with content. I can replace cameras and sound gear but not the memories captured. All I can suggest is that you could do the same? Remove the cards, they are easy to pocket, and you have all the data with less likelihood of losing them or having them stolen.
No method is foolproof; you can only do your best in the circumstances you are confronted with. The police response was unbelievable. Any decent officer investigating multiple crimes from one location would be all over these people like a rash. Certainly, the security guard must be suspected of being complicit in some way. Imagine all the bad PR from tourists and others about being unable to view the footage. I suspect the law does not protect the robbers. Can you imagine if the robbers confronted you and murder took place that the police would say, "Sorry, but we cannot look at the footage." Me thinks they are taking the easy way out so no investigation needs to happen. Complain to the Chief of Police, or the Commissioner and highlight your video footage from here. I believe you might get some more satisfaction from that course of action.
The only reason I clicked the "Like" button was because of the info you provided on the RF reading ability of the scum bags out there… I am a retired IT tech of some 27 years and all this new "tech" is the main reason I left my career in that field.
My faith in humanity has just fallen to the negative numbers now, and will NOT be going out of the country, no matter how much I would like to see some of these places that are on my "bucket list".. Time is running out for my wife and I due to our age and willingness to venture out into this WWW of the world today… Kinda reminds me of the dark days of the 20th Century when the world was in Chaos…. Thought we would have gotten a little better than than… Guess not..
With AI now controlling our world, I can only imagine what it's going to be like 20 years from now?
Sorry for the rant on your own post that is expressing your own rant on the whole deal, but it really hit home with me for some reason, so there you go.. I wish you the best of course and have followed your "Gone With The Wynns" channel for as long as I can remember… Take care you two!
Wow, i am so sorry that europe failed you ! Just like everywhere in europe now, the invaders are being protected and the man is wrong, because the very same is going on in england as well. Laws dont count anymore and if you are white, well, go figure.
so the moral of the story is to move to Amsterdam and become a smash and grab thief. what is the address of that parking garage by the way ? asking for a friend.
Oh wanted to add the guard wasn't in the office cause he was watching your Baja footage or trying to figure out the camera.
I agree with the privacy laws. However, if there is a camera for security the authorities should be able to look at the footage if a crime is committed, otherwise it's of no use. I agree that the parking administration should be liable because they sell "security" but obviously do not provide it (breech of contract).
What a shithole of a country
The should all been s3nt to prison it was organised crime by the garage and owners and s3curity bad publicity
Sorry for your loss and disappointed in Amsterdam police inaction. 😢
Likely someone that Mr Poof met on Grinder.
You were not robbed, you were burgled. Robbery is theft with violence or theft with threat of violence.
That is a shame. But life's NOT fair and common respect has declined, NOT just in America, but around the world. Your insured.
Human garbage exists all over the world unfortunately.
This sucks. So sorry it happened to you. Possible future steps: put all equipment out of sight before you arrive to park. This would reduce the likelihood that someone was watching you put the equipment away. Keep your SD cards on your person.
Feel awful for you guys! Need to go back there in disguise and plant one if those exploding glitter boxes in the car. Not that it will stop them, but it should give you a little satisfaction!
A conservatives is just a liberal that has been mocked by realty 🙂
New European immigrants need to supplement their income somehow?
Government handouts only feed so many mouths.
Unfortunately, that’s the reality no one wants to admit. Start changing your minds, they’ve been washed.
It wasn’t wrong, so sorry I know it all about the footage. All you could have done differently is put the camera in the trunk then drive to the garage.
Whew. Ouch. Just sorry. Excellent report, thanks.
Im so sorry to hear this. And how police does so little for ya.
We call that liberal laws. Such a bummer . Sorry it happened . Hopefully you had some ins
I'm sorry you went thru the incident! 😔
Wow, you all are awesome! We've had several people reach out with a suspect listing on https://www.marktplaats.nl/ It's a new account selling a sony fx3, with 2x 160gb cards, listed 6 days ago". That specific camera is not mine, I can tell because there is a different brand of side handle and part of a cage…BUT if anyone notices another listing please send it our way. I wish there was a way to flag our Serial Numbers, but I haven't found anything helpful online. I contacted Sony but didn't receive a reply.
Here's what was stolen exactly:
– Sony FX3 with Peak Design Side CL-3 Clutch on Right side and Quick Release Plate on the bottom
– 2x Sony 160GB CF Express cards
– Sony 24-105mm OSS f4 lens with petal hood
– DJI Mic 2 Reciever
– DJI Mic 2 Camera Adapter
Thanks for the support and a big hug to all the Amateur Sleuths out there 🙏🏻
