Scandal Sheet (1952): A Dark Dive into Media Ethics
Director: Phil Karlson
Cast: Broderick Crawford, Donna Reed, John Derek
Writer: (based on the novel by) Charles Lawrence
In the shadowy realm of 1950s film noir, Scandal Sheet emerges as a gripping exploration of sensationalist journalism and moral decay. Directed by Phil Karlson, this taut thriller showcases Broderick Crawford in a standout role as a ruthless newspaper editor whose insatiable hunger for headlines leads him down a treacherous path.
The narrative unfolds as Crawford’s character, obsessed with the allure of scandal and sensationalism, inadvertently kills his estranged wife during a heated confrontation. In a desperate bid to conceal his crime, he enlists the help of his own reporters, plunging them into a web of deception that raises chilling questions about ethics in the media.
With its crisp pacing and moody cinematography, Scandal Sheet crafts an atmosphere dense with tension and paranoia. The film’s cynical view of the media’s role in society reflects a broader critique that remains relevant today, examining how the pursuit of sensational news can corrupt not just individuals but entire institutions.
Donna Reed and John Derek provide strong performances, adding depth to a plot that deftly navigates themes of guilt, ambition, and the high stakes of journalistic integrity. As the story progresses toward an inevitable confrontation, viewers are left to grapple with the moral implications of the editor’s actions and the consequences that follow.
Overall, Scandal Sheet stands as a classic example of the film noir genre, expertly blending thrilling narrative with a sobering reflection on the darker sides of human ambition and media responsibility.

What a great movie!
The editor of an exploitation newspaper commits a murder and assigns his protégé to investigate hoping to divert attention away from himself. Broderick Crawford is best remembered for two roles: his Oscar-winning turn as Willie Stark in All the King's Men (1949) and as Chief Dan Mathews on the syndicated TV series Highway Patrol (1955). He was also memorable as Judy Holliday's vulgar partner in Born Yesterday (1950), roles both actors had originated on Broadway to great acclaim.
Doctor didn't notice scars on wrist? It wasn't mentioned.
They don't make them like that anymore, as it was most enjoyable. Thank you for posting. Much appreciated.
Really good movie and a great cast. Thank you! 😃
What an outstanding movie with great performances. Broderick Crawford always gave a great performance! I don't know why it wasn't more popular. I think it would play better if it was released today. It strikes a familiar cord with today's sensational press and fake news media.
And to think John Derek went on to feature in The Ten Commandments and marry Bo. How lucky can a guy get!
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 out of 5! 👏
A movie very much rewatching, which I just did for the umpteenth time. Thank you, Stream City!😊

Great movie .. my second name is McLeary.
Great movie,
Based on a Sam Fuller novel, photographed by Burnett Guffey and directed by Phil Karlson…How can you go wrong? Karlson is one of the very best noir directors. 99 River Street, Hell's Island, Tight Spot, Five Against the House, The Phenix City Story, The Brothers Rico.. He actually lived the noir life as a young man in Chicago. THIS IS A MUST SEE!!

There he goes again that reporter thinking he knows more I like the Judge is it something with judges they remember stuff. Remember what Julie's mother said about her judge. Judge wasn't going anywhere with Crawford. He didn't kill the other guy he gave him $5.00's I think wonder if the man knew he was the man with Charlie but he kept his mouth closed or not.
I don't like like reporter at all he needs a kick in the butt.he thinks he's so smart but he is j mean thinks he's better than everyone else. I saw this before good show. As big as Crowded is he keeps getting in an out of small dark places. Why does that stupid reporter keep going to his boss telling him stuff he doesn't seem to be able to do anything on his own.
I don't like to see people smoking in pictures Speacly in these old black and white pictures .This is before we knew better. But now I wish the could edited it out. Donna Read looks weird with a cigarette. Even though she never seems to talk more than one puff but one puff is enough.
I can't stand that lady who is getting .married she is holding and lading all over that man. She looks like a fonuse or something on that man even the look on her face is horrible. She just keeps rubbing his arm, with that stupid look on her face. He doesn't have enough sense to run she won't go.I don't understand why she kept talking about how she was going to destroy him I knew she wasn't going to get out of that room he was going to kill her.My didn't she and other people like her who go off on people theiren . I know they are mad but come on common sense.
"Mark Chapman"?????no wonder he changed his name!!!!
Great, gripping film. Thanks for posting.
