Father unknown? Life as a sperm donor's child | DW Documentary
Artificial insemination has been a possibility for decades, yet some aspects of it are still being debated — including in Europe. Not least of those is whether there should be a limit on how many times a donor can give sperm.
Hanna got pregnant while without a partner — through a sperm donor. Not only is that allowed in Sweden, the government sponsors it. She became pregnant on her fifth attempt. Other European countries prohibit artificial insemination for single people, others offer less financial aid. The legal situation across Europe is a patchwork of approaches.
Leontine’s father was an anonymous sperm donor. She wanted to learn more about him, and discovered that she has at least 27 half-siblings scattered across the continent. In Sweden, some believe there should be a limit to how often a person can donate sperm. There is no consensus on that in the rest of the EU.

A child deserves a dad
Yuck. I would only have a child – the old fashion way, and with my life partner.
Never adopt either.
In my opinion it is not good for childrens future becuase i am working daycare and that is 5yrs girl who has no father. She Said every day I have no father and other children in the class knows that and Said yes she has no father so I feel sorry about that
The future of children born through sperm donation is in the hands of everyone watching this video. After all, isn’t it adults like you who shape the society they’ll grow up in? Sometimes, it even feels like there are people who almost want these children to end up unhappy.
all the comments ignoring dv and abusive relationships
it is worse for the child to have a bad dad, you all cry about birth rates but always put limits
A child's right to know her or his father should be a universal law.
Taking deliberate steps to deprive a child of the possibility of a relationship with a father smacks of narcissism and selfishness.
There are plenty of us guys out there, many wanting to be fathers. I am a father myself, but my ex decided to leave to chase romance and someone who was able to do the things I struggle with (planning – ADHD). I was very devoted, but they quickly discarded me due to my difficulties with my ADHD.
They moved hundreds of miles away to move closer to where they were born, and I had to throw my old life away to be part of my daughters life and try to make reparations.
Now all I have left is seeing my daughter half the week and a broken heart since they found a new romance… Apparently being dedicated isn't enough any more.
On these dating apps and sites all you find is a load of women who are looking for the 1% of men. I've been told I'm attractive by more than one person, and I don't have that much difficulty getting dates, but even still it feels like 99% of women are chasing the 1% dream man who has a lot of choice and is unlikely to choose 99% of women.
And then there's the law side of things if you get married… The man always seems to get screwed over even if he basically bought everything… if you have kids the woman gets the house regardless of who paid most.
And finally there's the hostility towards men, if you so happen to flirt a bit with a colleague you might find yourself being sacked and if you flirt with someone who doesn't like you, you might get dirty looks instead of a polite refusal.
It's no surprise that modern society is having to resort to artificial insemination. It seems decency and realistic expectations are completely off.
There should be regulations. Some ppl r fathering hundreds of children through sperm donations. This will cause problems in the future
It's fine.
We will see how these conceived children feel when they grow up.
They never thought about the consequences of this couples who discovered that they are brother and sister after spending years together and w child leaving without a dad all he’s life it’s really devastating
Extremely Selfish and unethical, even with dads who ran away from their children atleast you have an idea of where you come from, you can meet your uncles, aunts and grandparents, not this where you feel like a robot made in a factory.
Mam tu potworne problemy natury moralnej (dziecko nie wie kim jest jego ojciec, dziecko czuje się "produktem") i ewentualnego kazirodstwa.
I would love to know my father
The children shouldn't be denied their valid real facts if it's their decision just as mum has her own choice. Mum should know when mum bonds reaches her child real question. The law is also for the donor because you donated as anonymous if a child wants to know you, you shouldn't denied them that. If the bonds never existed after should help psychological recovery. Our parents personal decision should have rooms to answer in future for the children of the personal adults decision. If a sperms is needed future answers to life created after that should also be good to answer for their life's clarity
Hamdulillah it's forbidden in islam relegion
If you want kids ask the girl for a marriage and have kids
The kids with grow up with thier parants and big familly
I think it is important to know who your father is not personally but because of accidental inbreeding.
who's rights matter most? OF COURSE THE CHILDS!!!!!
Call me old-school but I believe in first comes love, marriage and then baby in the baby carriage. If I never got married I never would have willingly gone into motherhood by myself.
And thats how the history is scrape off ,,,poor generation is yet to come no father figure no paternal history 😢😢😢
I want my own babies just like him more than a life partner ❤️❤️
Children must have the right to know their father.
Dark future life for the kids
I’m considering contributing via donation. I am a young widowed mother- my husband and I were going to conceive our next child after our son’s first birthday. My husband wanted to conceive earlier and felt some urgency, but I wanted to wait until our son turned 1. That is now a huge regret that carried- my husband passed suddenly from a heart attack just a few days after our son turned 1. It’s been 3 years now, I am now thinking of donor conceiving. I would prefer to remarry and everything, but the clock is ticking and God would have to send me someone soon. I don’t want to wait and end up with another regret life that can’t be fixed.
This should not be allowed, point blank period! Children are not acessories, they have the right to grow up with a mother and father or to at least know who their father or mother are. This is so wrong, and I think that IVF should only be limited to married couples who don't need a surrogate (because that also is immoral and creates its own issues for the child). If you can't have children naturally, then just be contented with what God has given you, stop playing God it never ends well. I feel so bad for these poor children.
This is crazy! It’s selfish of the adults, it’s unfair to the kids, and eventually siblings will be marrying each other. What a mess this is going to create
Choosing to use a sperm doner is a shocking selfish decision. They use to word love. But, it’s the opposite of love.
I think having children by donor is the way to go. That way the mother can raise the children without a jerk of a man using the kids as a object to control things.
Where are the childs rights in all of this. ?
Sperm donation is really not a good idea. The offspring will have many siblings but won't be able to identify them. Women who want to have a child alone can do it with a known sperm donor.
Sounds dangerous donating sperm no one knows after donating what tf can happen with the guy who donated or ends up in court for child support
thinking only about what is important to you, and not to your child. bizarre.
This is great for those who wants to stay unmarried
Guys travelling to other countries to keep donating sperm… That sounds like something else than caring for women that want to be moms.
Why can't children meet and communicate with their fathers if both children and fathers want it? Perhaps it's time to allow this.
2:08 But its even more important for child knowing his father. This is very cruel towards child
Father unknown? Yes, when you are born in the 1990s in Russia, like I was, in my generation, many never met their father. And in many other countries, where men can be like stray cats, no body will demand responsibility from them, neither economic nor emotional. Therefore, even if the father is unknown, the child is wanted and mother is more economically and more emotionally prepared for that, than the millions of mothers left by men.
Sollte verboten werden
