- Lowell Sherman as the disapproving family member
- Additional supporting cast
In Ladies of Leisure, directed by Frank Capra, Barbara Stanwyck delivers a groundbreaking performance in her first major role. This pre-Code romance weaves a poignant narrative featuring Jerry Strong, portrayed by Stanwyck, who is a jaded party girl caught in a world of superficiality and societal judgment.
The film centers around John Ainsworth (Ralph Graves), a wealthy artist who chooses Jerry as his model for a painting intended to depict themes of hope and redemption. Through their professional engagement, a transformation occurs; what begins as a mere contractual arrangement blossoms into genuine affection. As John sees beauty in Jerry—who society has deemed unworthy—she starts to recognize her own worth, offering a refreshing, poignant commentary on perception and self-acceptance.
However, their budding romance faces fierce opposition from John’s disapproving family and societal expectations. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the 1920s, a time where the clash between love and societal norms becomes the crux of their struggle. Jerry’s character arc reflects an emerging sense of empowerment and self-worth, challenging the traditional roles often assigned to women of that era.
Ladies of Leisure not only serves as a testament to Stanwyck’s talent but also highlights Capra’s knack for storytelling, combining melodrama with moments of light-hearted humor. It delves into themes of love, societal judgment, and self-discovery, leaving audiences pondering the true meaning of redemption.
This film remains an essential piece of cinema history, showcasing the depths of human emotion amidst the constraints of society—a timeless exploration that still resonates today.

Marian makes me sad how she pursued Eric. Sighs.
Harry Cohn, who co-founded Columbia Pictures (with his brother Jack and their partner Ed Brandt who was the president at the time) was a lousy producer, a nasty person and a sexual assaulter. Cohn was called White Fang because he belittled many of his actors directors, and crew members while shooting films on the Columbia set. Many were afraid of Harry Cohn, but there were a few that could stand up to him. That one was Frank R. Capra. If it weren't for Capra, Columbia would never become a major studio😊
Release Date: March 1, 1926
Excuse me, this doesn't star Barbara Stanwyck. And the plot is different than described in your notes.
I think that there's been a mix-up.
I enjoyed the movie, nonetheless. Thanks.
Please mention the year of production.
Is this restored? It looks amazing! Also I'm confused is the whole movie not here? Why would we buy the movie when we can watch it for free? Can someone explain
I could start a conversation, but no one would hear me. It's a tree falling in the forest kind of thing.
