Our Nowruz Celebration in the Village During the War in Iran 🌿
In a world where many seek solace amid chaos, our village found joy and unity in celebrating Nowruz, the cherished Persian New Year. As evening descended, we gathered around a crackling fire, our laughter mingling with the warmth of the flames—an ancient tradition reminding us to leap with hope into the new year.
Anchoring our celebration was the Haft-Seen table, carefully adorned by my sister with symbolic treasures: lush sabzeh for rebirth, vibrant apples for health, glistening coins for prosperity, and the aromatic joy of garlic and sumac. Each item encapsulated our values and dreams, serving as a reminder that even in tumultuous times, blessings abound.
The heart of the celebration pulsed with the aroma of our Nowruz meal. We ventured to the spring near our wooden cabin, where we caught fresh trout, their glory gleaming in the sunlight. As we prepared them, the air filled with fresh herbs—gathered from our garden—that transformed our meal into a masterpiece of flavors. My mother’s hands worked magic, blending walnuts, onions, sour plums, pomegranate, and wild herbs into a stuffing that embodied love and heritage.
With hearts full of tradition, we carefully filled the trout, sewing them closed with care, and placed them in the oven to bask in warmth just as we welcomed our guests. Each bite of the succulent fish paired with fluffy Iranian rice carried the spirit of our hospitality, reaffirming our resilience and togetherness as we shared this meal with those who sought refuge alongside us.
