The revival of Spain's dictator Franco? | DW Documentary
Ninety years ago, a coup against the Spanish Republic led to Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. Today, many people of all ages in Spain are romanticizing that regime, a trend fueled by the far-right political party Vox.
After Franco’s death in 1975, Spain’s democracy was established based on the Amnesty Law of 1977, which shielded Franco-era agents and officials from prosecution. But victims are still demanding justice and compensation. Today, there are two opposing narratives: One is based on a duty to tell the truth, while the other uses nostalgia to revive a former authoritarian system of government. Between the ruling left-wing coalition, right wing parties and the far right, there appears to be no path forward to reconcile conflicting views of Franco’s legacy.
Against the backdrop of this political divide, even some young people long for the old order under Franco. Right-wing populists are exploiting this trend to once again call democracy into question — especially the far-right party Vox, whose influence is growing among voters.

Democracy has failed the young
How could someone promote an era they never lived in …
He was not a fascist. Please do your homework.
I love DW documentary ❤
I guarantee this kid would not have these views had he lived under the franco regime
Viva Franco
still there are spanish people who are not scumbags, or what is the same, who are anti franco, anti fascist, the most of us
I love how the left takes no responsibility for the rise of the right. Extremism breeds pushback extremism
The conquistadores had the same approach with the indigenous people in the americas, is the scam of Spain
The mausoleum should be demolished
Down with the dictators, wherever they are. There is not place for them in this world
Despite all of democracy's faults, the main point is u get to choose. These youngsters (or anyone) who say they prefer living in a dictatorship r gonna hv a rude wake up call when they get forcibly conscripted, shoved into an unmarked van or in front of a firing squad. Justice they say? In most dictatorships, their notion of justice r called show trials. Don't even talk abt basic human rights.
This is the problem with ignorance
I live in Italy and I am very disappointed that Europeans no longer believe in the Judeo-Christian values and the greco-roman laws which gave us great laws and freedoms. There is so much ignorance in Europe.
This young man is very dangerous.
They are poisoning the weak minds of the youth.
Where is any mention made about the atrocities committed by the Republicans? I would rather live under a Franco Dictatorship than the Socialist/Liberal Dictatorship that we have in Europe right now.
I hope this makes people understand, outside Spain, why there's no centre-right in Spain. This is the source of the Spanish right wing politics.
What about crimes committed by republicans?
No mention
"We mainly look for young people. They're the easiest to recruit." – That lines gave me chills
😂🤡
Don't be deceived.
They all know they can't live or survive under a fascist govt. However, seeing how much Putin, Orban, Trump, Farage and even Maria Le Pen etc., had enriched themselves and gotten away unchallenged with states, private and crypto money.
That young man is simply looking for people who will be foolish enough to hand him eternal wealth like Franco, Hitler, Mussolini lived unchallenged for years.
Something we're now seeing in the US, French, British and German right wings.
Inevitable, after polluting and corrupting European society with so many unvetted illegal economic immigrants.
Supporting Moscow and communism in the 1930s had its price. Many Spaniards paid it.
The tyranny of socialism-communism has resulted in the poverty, hunger, oppression and death of millions globally.
what is happening ppl? It's interesting how I've been hearing people from other countries express a wish to live under a dictatorship as well. It's making me wonder. even in the Americas too in Peru, the Domican republic too, Chile, costa Rica, looks like Democracy is failing or what? The situation might be linked to the job market, economic challenges, corruption, and migration. When people look at China and Vietnam and see no chaos, they might be scratching their heads in confusion.
delighted and relieved to see the young generation is anti-woke. i had given up on this pansy generation but maybe there is hope
better fascism than communism
come and live in my country, Myanmar where the military dictatorship has been ruling for decades…. Come on !!! it is not even funny…. it is very suffocating to live under the dictatorship as you lost all of your freedom… I dont understand why certain people from Europe want to live under dictatorship….
This wouldn't be happening if the government actually cared about native Spanish people. Bad policy leads to the spread of this nonsense. But the explanation is simply- "The far right!" Same thing in Germany. Same thing in France. Yet no honest commentary of the terrible policies that leads people down this path.
