FIFA Scraps Controversial Plan Amid Global Backlash
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced the cancellation of a controversial initiative to sell stakes in the organization’s flagship tournaments, including the men’s and women’s World Cups. The decision follows a wave of global opposition from various stakeholders, signaling a significant shift in FIFA’s approach to governance and investment within football.
Infantino acknowledged the backlash, stating that the proposal had “created divisions” among member associations that no longer aligned with its intended goals. The Swiss official indicated that the initiative aimed to attract private investment in FIFA’s major competitions but ultimately proved to be more divisive than unifying.
Under the plan, FIFA had intended to offer each of its 211 member associations a $40 million (£30 million) incentive to support the investment proposal. However, the widespread outcry from players, fans, and even some national governing bodies highlighted deep-seated concerns about the potential commercialization of the sport and the implications it could have on its integrity.
Infantino’s decision to scrap the plan reflects FIFA’s acknowledgment of the importance of maintaining unity and trust within the global football community. The backlash has served as a reminder of the delicate balance FIFA must strike between generating revenue and protecting the sanctity of the sport.
As FIFA moves forward, it will be crucial for the organization to engage with its stakeholders more effectively and prioritize transparency and inclusivity in its future initiatives. The cancellation of this plan marks a pivotal moment in FIFA’s governance, as the organization seeks to regain the confidence of fans and players alike.

Good!! Now he should resign for poor judgement.
Only reason he's backing down is because investors realised there wouldn't be anything left to invest in 🤷 Infantino Must Go!
Gonna be difficult for WC2030 already considering one of those countries has invaded another
How did this crook become the president?
FIFA to FAFO.
The Orange administration is doing nothing short of money laundering!!!!!
Finally . . . . common sense prevails. Now get rid od Infantino and the entire team before they reword their intention and bring it back under a different guise. The game cannot be trusted whilst Infantino is in charge,
It's not enough, he is utterly corrupt and part of the Trump-Kushner mafia clan and he WILL try to impose it again in the next few months, I can guarantee that with 100% certainty. He will publicly claim he's abandoning the idea, but in reality, he'll lobby behind closed doors to his sycophants and accomplices in the South American and African confederations and try to push it again under a different label and a more pernicious method.
UEFA needs to summon a special meeting an force him to resign with immediate effect, then, the new president must imperatively come from UEFA, and then FIFA needs to be purged from top to bottom, with a special care given in dismantling the systems of corruption put in place in South America, especially with Paraguay and Argentina, with a very important decision which will be to strip Argentina from its 2022 for blatant cheating; the refereee of that match, and every single referee who officiated in the 2026 World Cup, especially those who were present on every Argentina and France matchs must be investigated by the police and their bank accounts thoroughly searched.
The 2026 World Cup should also be stripped from Spain, as their win has been rendered possible only because they beat France thanks to a felonous referee working for Argentina.
The African Confederation must be dissolved and its remaining institutions put under total control of UEFA, with their voting rights permanently removed; in fact, the entire voting processs should be overhauled, and no country outside of the top 20 should have a vote at all, as countries with lower rankings have proven to be both inept, irrelevant, and actively detrimental to football as a whole, on top of being demonstrably more susceptible to corruption and vote buying by a felon president like Infantino.
To properly govern football, only the best and brightest should be allowed to make all the decisions, and if it sounds elitist, good, because this is exactly what it is and what is needed, only elites should be governing; if you want a seat at the table, then player better and climb to the top 20; it will give both accountability and motive to anyone to better themselves.
Can't come back from this now… Self sabotage at it's finest
I still don't trust him. He got caught doing something horribly wrong. Once trust is broken, he should be fired. The world has been unhappy with his dirty agenda ever since World Cup 2026 began, especially alongside Trump.
Football has been saved twice in a single month
great! now, sack gianni !
Good.
He was hoping to sell the World Cup to the Trump family! Let’s make sure to mention the connection.
Could Infantino be scrapped
After 81 years we still have European autocrats trying to impose their corrupt vision and ideas on the world.
fire him, fire him now
It's not enough. He must be fired, along with all of those who were complicit.
He's just going to try a different way to go about it.
Was this a smoke screen to get 64 teams in
We need guarantees and fire and get infantino out now
GET HIM OUT
Get him out
If your goal is burning down all the trees, it is no problem if you fail a lot of times. You only have to succeed once. This was one shot, more to be fired.
Selling Fifa out to donald trump….
Soccer, or football as you call it on the BBC? This said by an English reporter? What a tool.
Hopefully he won't proceed any further as well.
Now Infantino should get the hell out of FIFA and go work with those American capitalis
