Canada is Not the Problem: Stellantis Considers Closing Ontario Assembly Plant
In a significant development that has raised concerns in the Canadian automotive industry, Stellantis, the multinational automotive manufacturer, is contemplating the closure of its assembly plant located in Ontario. This revelation was brought to light by Unifor National President Lana Payne during a press conference held in Toronto. The union has been informed by Stellantis that the company is “seriously” considering options regarding the future of the facility, prompting immediate discussions about the implications for workers and the local economy.
The potential closure comes at a time when the automotive sector is already facing headwinds due to shifts in consumer preferences and a global transition toward electric vehicles. Stellantis, formed from the merger between Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group, has been grappling with how to allocate resources and ensure competitiveness in an evolving market. Payne’s statements underscore the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the need for collaboration and dialogue in order to safeguard jobs and maintain production within Canada.
Labor unions play a critical role in advocating for workers’ rights, particularly in industries heavily reliant on manufacturing. Unifor has historically supported its members in times of distress, and this situation is no different. With the threat of layoffs looming, the union is mobilizing to ensure that the interests of its members are front and center in negotiations with Stellantis. The conversation around the future of the Ontario plant is not simply about job retention; it raises important questions about Canada’s place in the global automotive landscape and the need for supportive policies that encourage investment and innovation.
As stakeholders respond to the news, the message is clear: Canada is not the problem. Instead, this situation calls for a collective reflection on the structural challenges that the automotive industry faces today. It is a pivotal moment for workers, manufacturers, and policymakers alike, as the implications of Stellantis’s decision could extend far beyond Ontario, influencing the wider Canadian economy and the future of the automotive sector in the country. The community and industry leaders will be closely watching how this situation unfolds, with hopes that a collaborative approach can yield solutions that prioritize both economic viability and the well-being of workers.

I initially thought US mindlessly imposed tariffs on Canada for no reason. Actually More Canadian products sell in US than the other way around. After hearing US’ sides of the story, it appears that Canada has been for so long putting hurdles for US products to enter Canada (diary products, Gulf stream jet certification hurdles – but Carney removed this recently, Banking, etc). Shouldn’t we remove all the hurdles and demand US to also remove the threat?
LANA PAYNE HAS SUPPORTED THE LIBERAL CULT AND THE MEMBERS PAY THE PRICE. THE MEMBERS SHOULD BE DISAPPOINTED WITH LANA PAYNE
Great job Canada!
NO TAXATION WITHOUT REMIGRATION
HEY LETS TRY ELBOS UP AGAIN THAT SEEMED TO WORK.
I highly doubt any Canadians work at that Canadian auto manufacturing plant anymore
I’d care if 100% of the jobs belonged to Canadian men supporting their families.
I’m guessing barely a single Canadian works there anymore
Canadian or American workers. Since we are brothers, it makes no difference.
It will be a good place to build the gripen jets.

Ankles up! You go get those mean Americans!
Anybody asking BYD if they are in the market for a used auto plant. They are already building busses there.
why can Canada produce its own car ?
The Liberals have completely destroyed this country.
Nothing angers a Canadian like seeing pay-for-comments by fpreign governments. Pls see comments below
Don't comment or like pr dislike these comments as it only puts them on top of the YouTube comments list. .
Close the plant. Florida Texas and other low tax or no tax states make more sense. Illonios is a dumb choice.
Stellantis vehicles should be taxed at 50% until we get all the tax payer funds that where paid to them to keep the plant open, with Canadians then boycotting them. The Canadian government should also seize the plant as a forfeiture of failing to follow through on a signed contract.
Maybe BYD or Geely can takeover. Political values are not important comparing to shutdown the plant.
Stellatis..is that the company taxpayers paid a bunch of money to for a battery plant but then they reneged on the contract that we have to take the hit on seeing as we can't get our money back because it turns out the minister chosen to represent us failed to read the contract?
Start building byd ev. Getbrid of as much usa as possible. Just get back all incentives paid
Remember, ankles up
Elbozos Up Canada
😂😂😂😂😂
Elbows up, Canada! 🇨🇦 Companies are shutting down and moving south. Are the Liberals fighting for you? No Mark Carney is on vacation with Trudeau! Or are you fighting to save Canada? Let’s go! Thank you, Trump keep the pressure on Canada. I want to see elbows down. Doug Ford, wake up and stop blaming everyone else. Thank you, Liberals, for destroying Canada. I can’t wait to see how much worse things get if this continues. At this rate, some Canadians will start believing that becoming the 51st state is the only way forward. 🇨🇦🇺🇸
Sell it to BYD or to someone who will make rail infrastructure to undercut the auto industry
Poking your biggest consumer in the eye for 18 months.
Whatever liberals are doing with their ankles behind their ears, IT'S WORKING 🤣👌🏻 yes keep doing that!
