Not What Anybody Wanted to See: Canadian Businesses React as Canada-US Trade Talks Fail
In a dramatic turn of events, Canada has decided to abandon negotiations with the United States, marking a significant setback for numerous Canadian businesses that rely on cross-border trade. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement that Canada is “walking away from a bad deal” sets the stage for a challenging economic environment as new tariffs come into play.
The repercussions are already reverberating through the business community. A new 50 percent tariff on Canadian exports to the U.S. threatens to dramatically increase costs for many industries. Sectors such as lumber, steel, and automotive manufacturing, which had pinned their hopes on a favorable resolution from the negotiations, now find themselves grappling with heightened financial pressures.
Business groups have rallied behind the federal government’s decision to walk away from the talks, recognizing the unfavorable terms that were on the table. However, their support comes with a clear warning: the ramifications of these tariffs could be severe, compounding the challenges already faced by Canadian enterprises that have been struggling amidst a fluctuating market.
Analysts are beginning to assess the financial impact of this trade impasse. While hopes had been high that tariffs would be reduced, the disappointing outcome leaves businesses confronting an uncertain future. Jasmine King reports that the financial fallout from the failed talks is only beginning to manifest, as companies brace themselves for increased costs, potential job losses, and a shake-up in their supply chains.
As Canada navigates these tumultuous waters, the trade relationship with the United States—a crucial player in the Canadian economy—remains clouded by uncertainty. Business leaders are left to ponder what comes next, hoping for a resolution but recognizing the challenges ahead.

All that the 51st state needs to do is to simply drop its pretension of being a sovereign state and join the Union. All these hassles are the result of the 51st State's wayward stubbornness of refusing to return to its natural American family. Once it's unified with the other 50 states none of these problems would exist as there wouldn't be tariff or trade dispute anymore.
Seems that we are in a prolonged trade confrontation. Personally think all our not a reality-based tough talks got us here 🙁
You do realize that's more important than donald trump and america, you realize their everywhere but worry about trades and politics get a life and be a real journalist
Carney may be a member of the Knights of Malta, but he has to do the Chicken Tonight dance.
PROPAGANDA.
MOST countries concluded trade deals with America months ago.
What GOOD has Carney done in over a year ?
Boycott american companies and made in the usa products. Check where things are from at the grocery store and avoid fast food.

ABSOLUTELY NOT💕
InshaALLAH.
IT claimed that the U.S. doesn’t need Canada . When IT did not get his way , IT threw a tariff tantrum. 🇨🇦 called ITs bluff .
Don’t be a downer
Im with America 🇺🇸 on this one
The truth is Carney should have done this a year ago
So carneys answer is to make things more expensive for Canadians
Other leaders can manage to reach a deal with the US, only because they care about their people. If we were strong enough to rely on no one, we wouldn't need to make deals with anyone. America is simply putting themselves first to secure the best possible outcomes for their own nation.
It breaks my heart to see the most selfish PM in the world. Our PM would rather sacrifice all of us than swallow his pride and say 'please.'
It's exactly what you voted for Canada. You really thought this used car salesman was the best choice. Good luck with that Canada. Keep those elbows up. It's too bad big talk doesn't pay the bills.

Canada doesn't need United sates of America we are better off with EU. The world has better trading partners and Canada should start to look building our economy not depending United states of America this why I voted for Carney!
Well, elbows up guys. Enjoy the new bonus tax!
gay and fake
treason in comments section maybe foreign actors.
The deal still stands. Build in the USA and no tariffs.
United states of America pretended to be Canada friend and all along what some of the citizens the United states America Marga really want to invade Canada, It just like Trump made the real racist come out and feel comfortable. I think part of United states of America has always been fascist,. Maga was created because Obama became the president of the united states of America . if you look at what Trump Maga does or Alberta Danielle smith it is all about control. When people stat under standing we are dealing with fascism the better.
The United sates of America is not our friend they are disrespecting Canada and NATO! 51 state of America and telling us we can not trade with the rest of the world??? when are Canadians going to wake up and smell the coffee. Canada is under attack. this is the real face of the united sates.
And now american consumers are going to pay for it 🤷🏻♀️
If Canada wants to do Business with united states of America we deal with blue states. This what Canada sign up to Nato country for!
This why education and learning about world war 2 and history is very important. this why Canada should be like the French less dependent on the united sates of America.
Elbows up
Cry baby cry
*Conservative businesses. Lol.
GET RID of THOSE TRAITORS who sold out their PEOPLE IN CANADA and GIVE YOUR PEOPLE BACK THEIR VOICE! UNCENSOR THE CANADIAN PEOPLE.
The real response is SAAB Gripen !
I'm not in agreement that no deal is “Not what anybody wanted to see”. I think that there are many Canadians quite prepared to Stand tall and proud and say "enough is enough", and that bringing our trade representatives home was the right thing to do. Dealing with a rogue administration in America has shown itself to be a much predicted complete waste of our time. It seems there will always be the "forever angry" Trudeau haters (I wasn't a fan, and never supported him at the polls) out there pointing fingers of blame with some false sense of security that a paperboy with over 20 years as a political loser could have handled this differently, but I think in a very short period of time, we'll all see the end of that comedy show. Canada is moving forward with the blessing and support of a majority of Canadians, and we clearly have the right man at the helm.
Stop the stupid talk. Fair Trade means Equal Trade. The only measurement that matters is the trade balance between the two countries. The media should explain and discuss this not tariffs and other tools of trade.
If the media didnt have morons to lie to they ould be out of business overnight
France setting up another war!! Perfect!
Carney wanted a rupture. He travelled the world smack talking the U.S. president personally.Unifor always supports liberals. Liberals support Unifor who said they will never post positively on conservatives.
Canadians deserve to know the exact details, not some tail of a Jewish capitalist coming at the 11th hour and demanding too much.
What was demanded? Did Canada not yield to align with the American foreign economic policy as it comes to China, Russia, Cuba and Iran? If that is the case, it is unlikely that Canadians support loss of prosperity and good neighbor to spite what is anyway a natural interest to Canada.
Let’s trust our PM and remember who you are dealing with. We had a desk that was working for both countries but Trump decided he wants Canada to say he conquered a country. He said the quiet part out loud so believe him!!! One look at Mark Carney, whether you like him or not, should tell you how bad that desk would have been for Canada 🇨🇦. He used words like “sovereignty”…I can read between the line. Trump wants to own Canada for its resources…look at what he did to Venezuela and tried to do in Norway! Then again, does he respect anything? No!!! He didn’t respect the sanctity of his marriage vows, so here we are.
