A Tropical Storm Warning stretches from the Bolivar Peninsula in Texas to southwestern Louisiana as Potential Tropical Cyclone Five churns in the Gulf, with landfall expected Tuesday and tropical storm conditions, storm surge and heavy rain all threatening the coast.
Marine Warnings Stretch From the Louisiana Coast to Galveston Bay
The NWS Lake Charles office issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Sabine Lake, Calcasieu Lake and the coastal waters from the Lower Atchafalaya River to High Island, Texas, with southeast winds of 20 to 35 knots, gusts up to 45 knots and seas of 4 to 8 feet expected this evening into Tuesday.
The NWS Houston/Galveston office issued a matching marine warning for coastal waters from High Island to Freeport, Texas, with winds up to 25 knots and gusts to 40 knots through 9 AM Wednesday. Mariners in both areas were told to remain in port, seek safe harbor or secure their vessels.
Bolivar Peninsula and Galveston Bay: Wind, Surge and Heavy Rain
NWS Houston/Galveston’s Tropical Storm Warning for Bolivar Peninsula covers Bolivar, Crystal Beach and High Island, with peak winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts to 40 mph, and the potential for wind up to 57 mph.
Storm surge up to 2 feet above ground is possible in surge-prone areas from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning. A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 3 to 6 inches of rain expected and locally higher amounts of 6 to 9 inches, raising the risk of evacuations and rescues from flash flooding.
Chambers County: Similar Risks Near Anahuac and Mont Belvieu
A separate warning for Chambers County covers Anahuac, Beach City and Mont Belvieu, with the same wind threat as Bolivar Peninsula but little to no storm surge risk. The same 3 to 6 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts up to 9 inches, and flash flooding risk applies here as well.
Southwest Louisiana: East and West Cameron Parishes Brace for Surge
In East Cameron Parish, covering Cameron, Creole and Grand Chenier, the NWS Lake Charles office expects peak winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph, but a higher storm surge risk of 1 to 3 feet above ground between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning, along with 1 to 3 inches of additional rain.
West Cameron Parish, including Johnson Bayou, Holly Beach and Hackberry, faces stronger winds up to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph, the same 1 to 3 foot surge potential, and 1 to 3 inches of rain.
