A Storm Surge Warning and a new Hurricane Watch are now in effect alongside an ongoing Tropical Storm Warning as Edouard closes in on the Texas-Louisiana border, with a life-threatening surge of 3 to 5 feet possible in West Cameron Parish and Lower Jefferson County through Wednesday morning.
Edouard has strengthened enough for the NWS Lake Charles office to begin issuing storm-specific advisories rather than generic tropical cyclone updates, a sign forecasters now have higher confidence in the storm’s track and intensity as it nears the coast.
West Cameron Parish: Storm Surge Warning and Hurricane Watch Together
Johnson Bayou, Holly Beach and Hackberry are under all three alerts at once: a Storm Surge Warning, a Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane Watch. Peak winds are forecast at 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph, but forecasters warn of the potential for sustained wind up to 57 mph if the storm tracks unfavorably.
Storm surge of 3 to 5 feet above ground is possible in surge-prone areas through Wednesday morning, with the threat described as “unfolding” as of Tuesday’s early morning advisory. An additional 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected on top of what has already fallen.
Lower Jefferson County, Texas: Same Triple Threat for Port Arthur and Sabine Pass
The Nederland, Port Arthur, Sabine Pass and Sea Rim State Park area faces an identical setup: a Storm Surge Warning, Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch together, with the same wind and surge forecast as West Cameron Parish.
A Flood Watch remains in effect here as well, with 2 to 4 inches of additional rain possible on top of already-saturated ground.
East Cameron Parish: Surge Warning Continues as Water Begins to Recede
Cameron, Creole and Grand Chenier remain under a Storm Surge Warning and Tropical Storm Warning, but not a Hurricane Watch. Winds here are lighter, forecast at 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph.
