A reptile capable of outrunning a grown man on dry land is living in the canals south of Miami. In March of two thousand twelve, a wildlife patrol team found one near Homestead. It was a warm night when their spotlight caught two eyes sitting low in the black water, just like an alligator’s. Expecting an oversized nuisance gator, they moved in to tag it. But the eyes were set too far apart, suggesting a skull larger than any local animal should have. Then it did what an alligator cannot. It did not roll or sink. It climbed from the water, lifted its belly completely above the mud, and raced into the sawgrass at roughly nine miles an hour before anyone could reach it with a pole. The incident was dismissed as mistaken identity: a large gator seen badly in the dark. Four years later, genetic testing at the University of Florida proved they had been wrong. The animal was not native to this continent. Its bloodline stretched seven thousand miles to an African river system where crocodiles kill an estimated two hundred people each year. Everyone in Florida was watching the snakes. Nobody was watching the water. This is the story of how the deadliest crocodile on Earth slipped quietly into South Florida’s suburbs, bred there for fifteen years, and left biologists with a question they still cannot answer.
