Summary of Knock on Any Door
Knock on Any Door is a compelling courtroom drama that dives deep into the socio-economic factors influencing crime and morality. Directed by the talented Nicolas Ray, the film features a gripping performance by the legendary Humphrey Bogart, who steps into the role of Andrew Morton, a dedicated defense attorney. His unwavering commitment to justice drives the narrative as he seeks to save Nick Romano, portrayed by John Derek, from the death penalty after the young man is accused of murdering a policeman.
Set against the backdrop of societal decay and the harsh realities of life in the slums, Morton passionately argues that the environment, rather than inherent evil, played a significant role in corrupting what once was a promising youth. As the story unfolds, viewers are taken on a poignant journey exploring themes of redemption, moral ambiguity, and the struggles within a flawed justice system.
Alongside Bogart and Derek, the film features an impressive supporting cast, including notable performances that add depth and complexity to the narrative.
Written with sensitivity and intelligence, Knock on Any Door not only serves as a gripping legal drama but also poses critical questions about the nature of crime and the impact of environment on human behavior, making it a thought-provoking watch for cinephiles and casual viewers alike.

Wonderful classic movie stars 5.
Don't blame your actions on society! You should know right from wrong! It doesn't matter if you are poor!
Don't blame the system. Blame yourself. A lot of people have had bad uprisings.
No subtitles.
You almost have Bo and Derek in this.
New one to me. Thanks for posting it. Something to pass my night. ; )
Addendum: An excellent film.
How I despise trial movies. Totally fictious and unreal. One would think the studios would have a few trail lawyers as advisors. But no trial lawyer advisors. Completely fake
Awesome movie!
Sin traduccion o sub-titulos. PORQUE NO SE LA GUARDAN.
Bogart was good in this but it was clearly a propaganda film of the time to put fear into delinquent young people. Capital punishment only serves to make us all killers as well. Humanity will never reach a higher level until we realize that there is nothing more precious than life and none of us have any right to take it.
Smoking was the downfall of these actors, and a lot of others were fooled by the ads of how they were like a breath of fresh air, but in reality, it was a disease for all who smoked cigarettes not sure if they had all the facts, but it did hurt a viewing population. I never smoked, and still I too have my issues due to the new thing sex sells, and everybody was buying, and my generation was hit by this in the new form of corruption destroying marriages.
The kid is kind of stupid, or there's not enough content to see how he gets caught all the time, meaning the setting is a bit poorly done. Not having outside information makes him look very stupid. Like Magic, the cops pop up. Love the clean movies, but even this needs a bit of work; mostly watched it because I like Humphrey Bogart acting. Oh, and let's not for get l love the style and the morals of Pretty Woman along with it, well most of them.
Absolutely pitch perfect Bogart.
I have never seen Humphrey Bogart give any speeches in any movie. This movie made me cry. Beautifully written and Bogart spoke so great that you would forget that. He’s normally a gangster in movies. Lol
The death penalty was not mandatory in the United States in 1949. A bit of poetic license here.
Thanks for posting this Stream City…Bogart is one of my favorites. 👍🥰
superb
Where are we today? Same cultural problems, poverty, kids without fathers, crime, excitement of youth violence, or unlawful activities. We have come a long way since the 1900s, yet the same problems persist in the 2000s. The same cure is available today as it was then. God.
One of the best ending monologues!
A bit overwritten by today's standards, the courtroom speeches I don't think would be allowed, especially the story of the bad pretty boy's life.
Bogart's character was a terrible lawyer.
Audio too low,cnt continue,saw this at age ¹yrs,now 74.
Cnt imagine how my class went to see this movie
Meus amigos cadê a legenda.em português Brasil. Obrigado.
You can play this movie, right along with Dead End, Angels With Dirty Faces, The Blackboard Jungle, Rumble On The Docks, Somebody Up There Likes Me, & On The Waterfront.
They're time capsules from decades ago, when we still had many poor whites in the slums also, with our juvenile delinquents committing street crimes, before we were benefitted with white privilege that enabled most whites to leave in the white flight.
Pretty mediocre. Clichéd and manipulative script. The poor kid from the bad side of town is a victim of society and is led down the garden path.
Get the fk outta here with that claptrap. We ALL make decisions, good and bad. And we are ALL responsible for our decisions. Period.
I will add this : as shown here, when a police officer gets murdered, it's considered a sick, twisted act worthy of the highest penalty in barbaric USA. But when a psychopathic goon wearing a uniform cuts down a civilian in cold blood…over 1000 civilians in USA have encountered this fate…the psychopath in uniform either walks or gets a slap on the wrist. This double standard is SICKENING.
This movie's climax was as good as those of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Twelve Angry Men." (Watch them!)
Unexpected ending. Good movie. Humphrey Bogart was intense and totally invested in this role❤. Thank you.😊
I DON'T RECKON THAT MY WIFE OR I EVER SAW THIS MOVIE BEFORE, BUT IT IS A GREAT MOVIE, A CLASSIC, MY WIFE AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO YOU – THANKS FOR POSTING THIS MOVIE FREE ON YOUTUBE SO WE MAY ALL ENJOY IT – – – BRAVO!!!!!!!
Life can be cruel, crime can be cruel, the punishment can be cruel. All things we do to each other. Some things cannot be changed and others only change with great consequence. There are times, I think, when we should change things, but to think that cruelty and the unfairness of life can be ELIMINATED is just a lie.
'Knock on Any Door' -1949- Stars: Humphrey Bogart, John Derek, George Macready. Put Bogie in any pix and he's the same. This flick is no different other than 1 of his liberal causes. An attorney defends a young hoodlum charged with murdering a policeman using the oppressiveness of his client's upbringing in the slums to appeal to the sympathies of the jury. No Spoilers, See it ヅ Thx
Humphrey Bogart turned every role into a diamond 💎
Humphrey Bogart must have needed a paycheck.
Didn't realize?Oh, God was a bleeding liberal, the guy executed the cop.He didn't just kill him , he deserved to fry
Sorry. I praise the good stuff. This ain’t good stuff. Weak, cliche-ridden script, John Derek’s inability to act, and Bogart’s sermonizing bored me to tears.
