Less than 10 seconds per motor sounds almost too good to be true. I’d like to see the production line running at scale before judging that claim.
The 18% smaller and 25% lighter numbers caught my attention. Weight reduction in the motor should have some pretty interesting effects on the overall vehicle efficiency.
The ferrite magnet explanation makes sense, but I still don’t understand how Tesla gets enough magnetic strength from a material that is much weaker than neodymium.
I’m a little skeptical about the 300-mile range claims being mainly attributed to the motor. Aerodynamics, battery size, weight, and tires probably matter just as much.
Do you think Tesla will eventually put this motor in the Model 3 and Model Y, or will it remain exclusive to Cybercab?
I can believe a rare-earth-free motor is possible. The difficult part seems to be making it small, light, efficient, and cheap at the same time.
