How Perfume Was Made 200 Years Ago: 3 Historical Methods
In an age where the sweet whispers of nature intertwine with the art of craft, the timeless pursuit of creating captivating fragrances holds a noble charm. As we traverse back to 200 years ago, we immerse ourselves in the romantic world of historical perfumery—a realm where every scent tells a story preserved in delicate flacons and serves as a gateway to emotions and memories.
The Allure of Traditional Ingredients
To understand the heart of perfumery in the 1800s, we must first appreciate the raw treasures from nature. Fragrant blossoms, aromatic herbs, and exotic spices were gathered with reverence, as artisans recognized the power these elements held. Think of fresh roses, blooming in gardens; their petals, with morning dew still clinging to them, are harvested just before sunrise to preserve their ethereal fragrance. Traditional perfumers understood that the essence of a flower could ignite nostalgia, love, or the thrill of adventure, all captured in a single whiff.
Method 1: The Art of Distillation
Our journey begins with distillation—a magical process that transforms raw ingredients into shimmering essences. Imagine a copper alembic dancing gently over an open flame, steam spiraling up and carrying the fragrant notes of blossoms into a world of pure creation. In this method, water infused with the delicate scent of flowers is transformed into a hydrosol, a fragrant water steeped in history. Each drop captures the essence of the plant, creating a beautiful symphony of aromas waiting to enchant.
Method 2: Expression by Hand
Next, we explore expression, a tactile technique that speaks to the heart of craftsmanship. Here, the zest of citrus fruits—like oranges and lemons—awaits your careful touch. Using a simple tool, the artisan applies gentle pressure to release the bright, vivacious oils trapped within the peels. The resulting essence is a burst of freshness, reminding us of sun-drenched orchards and warm summer days. This method exemplifies the intimacy of scent creation, reminding us that beauty is often born from hands-on experience and heartfelt connection.
Method 3: Enfleurage – A Soft Embrace
Finally, we discover the enchanting method of enfleurage. This slow and gentle process involves placing delicate flowers on layers of odorless fat, where they are allowed to infuse their fragrance over time. Reflect for a moment on the patience required; each flower, resting quietly in its embrace, releases its essence over several days, slowly merging with the fat to create a unique and sublime product. This labor of love bears not just fragrance, but a deep sense of tradition and respect for the botanicals, elevating scent to an art form.
The Fragrance of Memories
As we reflect on these historical methods, we uncover a sense of inspiration—a reminder that the art of creating fragrance is not just about blending ingredients, but embarking on a journey through time. These methods reveal the dedication and passion of those who came before us, crafting their legacy, one scent at a time.
Today, we have the extraordinary pleasure of embracing these timeless techniques, adapting them to our modern lives while honoring their age-old origins. Let us carry forth the spirit of these artisans, allowing the evocative essence of nature to fill our spaces, uplift our souls, and rekindle the memories pinned in our hearts.
With each custom blend, let us celebrate the beauty of creation—reminding ourselves that like perfume, life too can be a harmonious blend of experiences, layered and complex, waiting to unfold in the most unexpected ways. In the realm of scent, we find not just a fragrance, but a narrative; rich, radiant, and eternally beautiful.

I learned from Moby Dick that they used ambergris to make perfume in the 1800's. I like the method you showed better because no whales were harmed!
I use to make all my own sachets, potpourri & bath soaks. I miss doing that.
Love the music in the background!!!!
I miss 😢the normal ASMR that you guys do on this channel. Not a fan of the music versions. 😞 My husband and I do watch this channel & the Chew & Chat for years

Seeing the geese, rooster and hen was also nice.
Thank you, Justine for the video.
With the music I can't hear the crackling fire or the sound of water being poured.
Justin, this was a wonderful video. I really enjoyed it. 💕🙏🏼🙏🏼
This video is beautifully put together.
Wow amazing ❤❤❤
Lovely music this time!
I love the music!
It must smell amazing in there!
Interesting. Very artistic.
You have a still! As a retired aromatherapist I would have loved to make my own distilled oils but didn't really have the space but I made them in other ways where I could. Your lavender embroidered herb pillow was beautiful! I bet the house smelt wonderful with all those essences, herbs and flowers!
I haven't bought perfume or sachets; definitely not potpourri in 30 years or longer! I have a rare disease that can make me have severe reactions to chemicals; amongst a dozen other problems. So I grow and make my own. My perfume is Honeysuckle and Jasmine. I could go on but 98% of what our bodies need; can be found in nature. That's not to say that people shouldn't take prescription medicine ok.
I don't drink now, but many years ago, there was a bottle you could buy at the liquor store here in Ontario called alcohol. I wonder if that would be less scented than even vodka
I love the chew and chat for this video
