China is investing heavily in a display technology that could eventually turn an entire wall into one seamless television.
The technology is called microLED. Like OLED, each pixel produces its own light, allowing deep blacks and incredible contrast. But microLED uses inorganic LEDs that can reach extreme brightness while potentially offering a longer useful life. Even more importantly, these displays can be assembled from smaller modules instead of being manufactured as one enormous panel.
In this documentary, we explore how microLED works, why producing millions of microscopic LEDs makes these screens incredibly expensive, and how Chinese display giant BOE is trying to solve the manufacturing problems holding the technology back. We also look at BOE’s massive 162-inch MicroLED display and how China is building the factories, supply chains, inspection systems, and production expertise needed to bring costs down.
Today, microLED displays can still cost as much as a luxury car. But if manufacturers can improve yields and mass-transfer technology enough, televisions may eventually stop being fixed-size rectangles entirely.
Instead of asking whether you want a 65-inch or 85-inch TV, the question could become how much of your wall you want to turn into a screen.
