Inside America’s Only Internet Sea Cable Maker
In today’s digital age, the unseen infrastructure that connects us across continents is more vital than ever. Ninety-nine percent of international internet traffic traverses cables stretched across the ocean floor, serving as the backbone of modern communication. As demand for these cables surges, driven by the growing dependence on cloud computing and artificial intelligence, one American company stands alone in its ability to both manufacture and lay these essential connectivity lifelines.
The documentary offers an exclusive glimpse into the factory that has been crafting these subsea cables for 73 years. Viewers are taken on a journey through the intricate processes involved in cable production, revealing how sophisticated technology and skilled craftsmanship combine to create the conduits that facilitate global communication. The narrative begins by explaining the functionality of these cables, detailing the engineering that allows data to travel thousands of feet underwater, epitomizing the extraordinary capabilities of modern science.
Beyond how these cables are made, the video delves into their rich history, tracing back to the early days of underwater transmission. This context sets the stage for understanding the role these cables play in contemporary society, especially in light of the increasing dominance of major tech companies that rely heavily on robust and expansive networks.
In a bold move, the production team also boards a multimillion-dollar cable-laying ship, offering an inside look at the complexities and challenges of deploying such infrastructure. The ship, a marvel of engineering in itself, is featured prominently as it navigates the ocean’s depths to install new cables that meet the burgeoning demand.
Geopolitical tensions are another critical theme explored in the documentary. The vulnerability of these underwater networks is highlighted, especially given their strategic importance to national security and global commerce. The video discusses scenarios involving cable breaks and the ever-looming threat of sabotage, raising questions about the resilience of our internet backbones in an increasingly unstable world.
While satellites are often touted as alternatives to subsea cables, the documentary reaffirms the unmatched reliability and capacity of these underwater installations. As experts weigh the pros and cons, one thing becomes clear: the vast ocean floor remains a critical highway for data transmission, and the only company capable of adding to this vital infrastructure in America is working diligently to keep up with unprecedented global demand.
As the video concludes, viewers are left with a profound understanding of why our data continues to journey beneath the waves and the essential role of subsea cables in shaping our digital future.

becuse the earth is flat
Another terrific BI piece! Love this channel
It would be a shame if someone were to destroy that company and killed the worlds Internet. We need a hero!
I thought all those satellites up there were supposed to handle most of the communications these days. Guess not.
When I see someone climbing a ladder with a harness i hate existence. Imagine taking minutes to climb a 10ft ladder. I climb 80ft and it takes me less time.
Snip snip
Freedom Day not far
Watching this as former Safety Team leader for Chinese company is beautiful
This is perfect for children…
China is laughing hysterically. I bet that they have a far more rapid and automated system
I'm the CEO you need a job let me know
Watching all of these suits drooling stupidly over how much more quickly they can enslave us all is fascinating. What a very un-selfaware group of people.
Holy sh** almost every part of this nonsense contains blatant flaws, falsehoods and/or garbage information – and for no reason at all.
I can understand some "simplifications" where it doesn't matter but when core arguments in this video are flat out false?!
For example: @5:32 – Speed of radiowaves in Earth's atmosphere is almost identical to light in glass fibers. The differences are so small they are entirely negligible and NOT the reason for fibre glass cables instead of radiowaves.
Yo 7:00 😂
I think fiber optics might be one of those technologies that was given to humanity in exchange for the right to abduct a couple hundred thousand humans a year.
Supposedly the aliens violated the treaty and started taking more people than they were supposed to.
Look up the greada treaty.
Fiber optics might as well as the transistor really appeared out of no where.
We were close to them but their development isn’t capable of being tracked in a linear line.
They just showed up.
Watching this while studying for CCNA
A shame those companies mentioned do more harm than good, making(75%) of its use is not in the majorities' favor.
As a fiber splicer myself i find this interesting to see how they handle OOS cables
They couldn't possibly make a whole documentary on fibre cable during the Ukraine war without mentioning drone warfare. Could they?
Is the entire LT bald?
Cables are already obsolete with Starlink.
