Exclusive: Mark Carney Discusses Alberta Referendum on Global News Morning
In a recent appearance on Global News Morning, Prime Minister Mark Carney engaged in a thought-provoking discussion with host Blake Lough about the pivotal Alberta referendum and the importance of national unity as the October 19 date approaches. Carney emphasized the integral role Alberta plays in the broader Canadian landscape, asserting, “Alberta at the heart of Canada is stronger. Canada is stronger because of Alberta.”
Throughout the conversation, Carney reflected on the government’s ongoing commitments to Alberta, highlighting key initiatives such as the Pacific link oil pipeline, defense agreements in Calgary, and efforts to enhance affordable housing in Red Deer. He underscored that the prosperity of Alberta directly influences the nation’s economic vitality, further igniting a spirit of optimism regarding the province’s potential.
Carney also drew parallels between the Alberta referendum and the Brexit vote of 2016, cautioning against the decision-making process devoid of clarity. “It wasn’t clear what ‘Brexit’ meant at the time people made that vote,” he noted, suggesting that the lack of certainty surrounding such pivotal decisions can lead to prolonged economic repercussions. He pointed to the UK’s economy as an example, stating that it is currently “at least 10 percent lower than it would otherwise be” due to the uncertainties that followed Brexit.
In a segment that addressed U.S. political dynamics, Carney responded to comments from U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra regarding Canadian interference in American midterm elections. “He’s wrong, number one,” Carney asserted, framing Canada’s stance on its national interests and Alberta’s needs as a crucial aspect of diplomacy rather than interference.
As Alberta inches closer to this significant referendum, Carney’s messages resonate with many residents who grapple with their province’s future within Canada. With national unity at the forefront of discussions, his insights promote a narrative of collaboration and collective strength among the provinces and territories of Canada.

How many mail in ballots?
Go home Carney.
Thank God for Carney
Immigration is not down. Another numbers trick for the idiots to fall for. They lower the permanent resident number but secretly boost provincial nominees, give more work permits, or visitor visas. Even Stats can is still revising numbers because temporary residents don't actually leave. They just keep getting extended until they get permanent residency.
Gas in Canada still gets around 30 cents a litter in taxes and regulatory fees. If you want inflation to go down, drop the taxes on the gas used to transport literally everything we consume. Liberals are playing the same tricks they always play. They cut a tax, create 2 new ones. They cut one immigration class, increase all others. They pretend to cut the public service yet keep creating new agencies to fix the problems the previous new agency was meant to fix.
Never ending new layers of bureaucracies are chasing businesses away.
I will be voting YES to option 1.
How about letting alberta decide.
As an Albertan I'm voting these conservatives suckers out. What's going in the province is beyond belief, colluding with USA to push narrative of separation. Jeezz if you want to spread racism and division please go to USA as these aren't Canadian values.
Alberta should leave canada anti tanker bans, Stagnant economy, provincial tariffs…joining america would be more beneficial considering no state can tariff another state
Vote for 51st state.
It makes a lot of sense to move towards permanent daylight time to do this.
National polls show the Prime Minister's personal approval rating at 60%, and some international reports placing overall positive sentiment near 67% to 70%. Meanwhile in Alberta: Ipsos (September 18–22, 2026): Prime Minister Mark Carney held the highest favourability rating among political voices in Wild Rose Country, reaching 59% among surveyed residents! Thanks for putting your hand up Mark 🙂
Wow the bot comments in here are wild. Clearly the datacenters already hit aren't enough. I assume the problem is they the rest of the bots are coming from US datacenters.
Canada voted in a part time snowboard instructor as their leader. (three times).
This is why the talent is leaving. Thanks Boomers.
Albertan friends! Please, do as PM Carney suggests: Big voter turnout. Make it too big to rig or interfere with. Option 1-Choose Canada!
Don't know why people are worried about separation, as it's pretty well impossible for them to separate legally. There's the constitutional issue, and the first nations issue. Just not going to happen. I lived through this in the late 70s with the Quebec referendum.
The world’s best leader ever
This is election interference in Alberta. This is a referendum against him and his buddies in Ottawa, stealing and crapping all over Alberta. Canada will find out 1 day that this man was nothing but a charlatan. As soon as Alberta votes to stay, those big things will just go away. Albertans don't believe Ottawa anymore and all their promises.
Carney is a big liar
Not to mention the prior treaties made with the indigenous peoples before Alberta was a province. Those treaties remain with the crown. You can't separate land you don't own. The years of litigation would be staggering & Alberta will lose more than is understood. Will regret it when they become a vassal state to the US taking all their assets and get nothing in return. Best move to US, easier.
I totally disagee with this guy… it is so ridiculous to just say "separatists" are wrong and this would be a bad thing instead of trying to understand why this is happening (alberta, Quebec, … more soon?). Can he just accept this is due to a huge misalignment with his policies ?
And go ahead guys saying this comment must be a bot …
If anyone disagrees with the libs; it must be a bot … Liberals are so open minded 🙂
BTW: something positive, I am happy the comments are authorized for once on a state funded organization (well I know it is not the same as CBC on that level)
I find it insulting as a Canadian to be paying close to $9-10 a gallon as voters in the USA grab pitchforks at under $5 and the UK at $10…We send them oil and we still get fleeced…the sooner we get out from under oils immoral grip, the better…Elbows up…
Fovever Canadian Carney was elected by China!
promises promises promises, all to be broken with no action
I hope Albertans wake up to this man .
Announcements do not equate to anything if there is no follow through !
Separation makes a lot of sense. I'm in BC & I would welcome separation accept we have a lot of socialists & people scared they might lose something that would never vote separation.
High-Speed rail between Calgary and Edmonton has been proven not to be worth it
Canadian AI that's funny any good AI engineers let this country long ago
The electoral reform the Liberals and Conservatives refuses to do based on population. Ont. 129, Que. 73, B.C. 46, Albt. 40, Man. 13, Sk. 11, N.S. 10, N.B. 8, Nfld. 5, P.E.I. 2, Yukon 1, N.W.T. 1, Nunavut 1, Airforce 1, Army 1, Navy 1 based on each province and territory guaranteed 1 electoral seat. The equalization formula also needs reform or scrapped. The other choice is a USA 🇺🇸 protectorate.
What percentage of the 1.6 Billion tax dollars does Global News get ? Will you be getting a bounus if the Albertans don't get a chance to vote ?
As Trudeau's adviser, Carney needs to take the blame for this.
The only way there can be unity is if the issues that got here are addressed. We still can’t build anything because Liberal governments gave environmental zealots the final say in everything. Equalization lets provinces choose poverty by policy and expect the rest of the country to pick up the tab for their social services. And that’s before we even get to taxation. And as for the projects of national interest, still no shovels in the ground, and the zealots have already started the court cases to block development. Nothings going to change.
I support any move that separates western Canada from the massive vacuum of money and common sense in Ottawa and Quebec.
Carney is lying 🤥 about everything that he says he’s just grovelling to Alberta stays and he can get CROOKFIELD to take over the pipelines. Liar 🤥 liar 🤥 liar 🤥 liar 🤥
End the carney regime!!
Is too late
Well, I believe that if Alberta separates, Canada will be weaker; there is no doubt about it, and yes, I understand the interest of the Federal government in keeping the province within the country. But I wonder: Will Albertans really be better without being part of Canada? All the forecast and outlook scenarios I see tell me that they will not see any benefit within the next generation, and then, who knows. So, is it pride? Is it identity? I've never been in Alberta, so perhaps I need to be there to understand but what also calls my attention is that the US is so vast and diverse, but I don't hear any separation referendums there. So, what makes us so prone to consider that? My best bet is that this is not a decision that Albertans are making because of them; I think there is a lure from the US, and to me, that's not only dangerous but sad. I feel that if that's their drive, they're up for a big disappointment.

viva Alberta
Liberals are responsible for All the divisions in canada !
Zero Trust in carney !
I hope he’ll send in the army, as Chrétien was prepared to do in ’94. Just like in Quebec, getting 50.1% of the vote doesn’t mean you own the land
Carney 😂😂😂elbows up 🤡🤡🤡
He can only do a 10 minute interview with easy questions
Canada is quickly becoming a prison.
The UPC will fail, then they split, and the far right will create another party, AGAIN…history keeps repeating with conservatives both provincial and federal.
Never satisfied, always angry, loud, and miserable.
If Alberta wants to leave and they vote to do so they should have to do the following. First and foremost take with them their share of Canada’s debt. Then, they have to have their own health care, they have to get their own gold backed currency, their social security net, unemployment benefits, pension benefits…the whole nine yards. You don’t want Canada? You don’t get any of the benefits. Once they figure out how they’re going to pay this $150 BILLION dollar expense the should be happy…huh?
Prime Minister Carney welcome home, great message to stay united. I live in Northern Alberta and it's great to see you again.
