In the wake of Alberta’s recent referendum results, provincial politics has been thrust into the spotlight, particularly around Premier Danielle Smith’s long-standing political trajectory. With a decisive majority of Albertans voting to remain a part of Canada, the response from the NDP has been pointed and critical. Party leader Avi Lewis expressed his elation at the outcome, framing it as a significant moment of unity for a province often embroiled in divisive politics.
Lewis, alongside NDP Parliamentary leader Don Davies, described the results as a “clear rejection of the politics of division.” He emphasized how the high voter turnout—over a million Albertans casting ballots—signals a desire for hope and solidarity rather than separation. Yet, Lewis did not shy away from scrutinizing the motivations behind Smith’s push for the referendum, deeming the action “unnecessary” and questioning the justification for the $130 million expenditure involved in the process.
Critically, Lewis described Smith’s career as having “been defined by a slow walk towards separation,” invoking a narrative that connects her political ambitions with a divisive ethos that many Albertans seem to be rejecting. His comments highlight not only the current sentiment within the province but also the broader implications for governance under Smith’s leadership, suggesting that her inclination toward promoting separation might not resonate with the electorate’s desire for unity.
This referendum has thus emerged not just as a decisive vote on Alberta’s future, but as a crucial moment that may redefine the political landscape in the province. As discussions unfold, the NDP’s response reveals a growing consensus among many Albertans, favoring collaboration and cohesion over the fractures that Smith’s political maneuvers may have sown. As the dust settles, it remains to be seen how these dynamics will shape future conversations around Alberta’s identity and its position within Canada.

SHE IS ON THE TAKE
hahahahah SHE BROKE THE blue power in ALBERTA. SHE MADE THEM INTO A BACK SEAT PARTY IMO. Blue is now a SEPARATIST party IMO. CALL A VOTE ASAP GET HER OUT. we need a real Government not a clown show . like carnival CARNEY
Media coverage for the NDP? What's the occasion?
IT Was a political PLOY to dismantle the BLUE party for good. now ORANGE and RED. hopefully not we need INDEPENDENT party AKA THE PEOPLES PARTY OR THE WORKING PARTY
An independent Alberta is a scam. Ten minutes after independence it would become an American state.
Keep it up Avi! Call it out. Hold Carney to account to provide for all Canadians with the Canadian values he espouses.
The UPC and Smith needs to go! Canadians to work together to move forward. More accountability for politicians who act like Smith and her party. Upc and Smith are for Trump and the American way. They coluded!!!!
Many of the issues will still have to be addressed, since the population said YES to several points. haha And keep up the good work Danielle!
🇨🇦 strong Together. Responsible cooperation to build Canada….like Eby greenlighting a parallel twinning of pipelines to west coast, and east, too. More capacity of refining our fuels for domestic use, strengthens our independance for the entire country.
No to the Nine completely flopped though. Albertans voted "yes" to 8 of the 9 other questions.
Thank you Avi. I trust my fellow Canadians, we are strong together. Shove this up your butt Global. Canada forever.
Not only did Canada win, TRUMP LOST
Why is the room so noisy?
When Trump was elected last year, which Canadian ran down to Mar a Lago to kiss his ring 1st? That should tell you everything
Alberta's Healthcare and education systems are embattled because of its own government and the defunding of these systems to sell they to private corporations . i can't wait to vote the ucp out of government.
Long live Canada 🇨🇦
Vote out traitor Smith asap 😢😢😢
The lies continue, despite Danielle selling out to carney it's a good start
Less than half the eligible voters showed up. Most of the votes to remain in Canada were concentrated in the two biggest cities. Even though 3/4 of voters chose to remain, the other nine questions of the referendum clearly show major discontent towards Ottawa, especially infringement on provincial jurisdictions and immigration. All is not well in Canada.
Alberta’s separatist = likely CIA operatives.
I have lived in Alberta for more than 15 years ❤Alberta. Together indeed we will be stronger 🇨🇦
I agree about the separation question but the results on the xenophobic questions are deeply troubling AND divisive!
Great people great country LETS STICK TOGETHER
Now … let's have an election.
Smith must resign. She has been compromised by the orange blob & can't be trusted. If she loves Maga so much, let her move to the US.
Avi Lewis? ,…who cares?
Avi Lewis as a leader? The comedy writes itself.
If it's such a rich Province why can't they support hospitals and education? Sounds very american to me. If the separatists think the us usa way is better, LEAVE!
Does Avi Lewis have a seat yet? How many Byelections will he miss.
Smith needs to resign , and go away!
She's literally said she wants alberta to stay a part of canada, yet daring to let her people have a say, even though when convenient leftists say we need to protect democracy, makes her a seperatist in their eyes. The NDP doesn't believe in democracy, otherwise they'd be fully on board giving the people of alberta a say in the future of their province
daniel is hated by those who wanted to stay in canada and those who voted to leave aswel, she's so cooked in the next election lmao
So after selling to gullible Albertans that a vote to separate is just a vote to send Ottawa a message. They are now saying 25% of Albertans want to separate from Canada.
The guy on The right should have spoken. He is a real person imo.
The seppies don't realize the root cause of their dissatisfaction is the boom/bust nature of the Alberta oil patch. Perhaps focus on diversification instead of focusing on a sun downing industry.
Allahuakbar
What about the other 9 questions? No reporting?
Bye bye soon @Danielle Smith; no more tears for you!
Dear NDP you need to stop blaming seriously pathetic she said multiple times she supports staying in Canada your the one saying otherwise the people wanted the referendum and as a good leader she let them vote and have their say
Best remarks on the issue.
THERE WILL BE NO pipelines going.. YOU ALL JUST DON'T GET IT, DO YOU!
I dont want to separate.. but Smith needs to fix the programs she has screwed over. Like AISH. There are disabled people that cant get on it and are desperate and cant work at all. And people that have been taken off AISH. There are people that are taking their lives over this.
