Cargo sailboats: A sea change for shipping? | DW Documentary
The shipping industry is facing radical change, with a goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050. Are cargo sailboats — which harness wind power using yacht-racing technology and digital weather routing — the solution?
The shipping industry is under pressure. It’s responsible for about three percent of global CO₂ emissions and is expected to become climate-neutral by 2050. To achieve this aim, wind power is coming under the spotlight. A remarkable experiment is underway on the world’s oceans, to find out how to make the best possible use of wind energy. Largely unnoticed by the public, the first modern cargo sailing ship was launched in France in 2020. The voyage was deemed a success.
Also in France, the 81-meter “Anemos” — currently the world’s largest sail-powered cargo ship — set sail in 2024. The inter-island freighter “Juren AE,” which operates in the Marshall Islands, was developed by the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer. It too demonstrates the feasibility of emission-free shipping.
In technical terms, these ships are modeled after the high-tech racing yachts used by professional sailors such as Isabelle Joschke and Boris Herrmann. Carbon masts, optimized hulls and digital weather routing enable fast, safe and efficient voyages. These innovations are setting the standard — just like in the automotive industry, where motor racing technologies are incorporated into vehicles on the production line. Cargo sailboats are now demonstrating that if shipping is to become climate-neutral, wind power is crucial.

No way the shipping industry is meeting the IMO's goals any more than Europe will meet net zero ashore
The objective here is very positive and admirable. It is an objective that trump is determined to destroy. He has a major objective of making wind power illegal
Excellent. I had no idea such technology even existed. This documentary taught me a lot.
A ship that can not handle containers has lost even before it get started. Going back to handle freight as general cargo cost to much time.
Sin tax for anyone using toxic fuels
Its also ZERO "0" fuel cost 🤣
Perhaps the future isn't always about inventing something entirely new, but rediscovering the wisdom of the past through the eyes of modern technology. Harnessing the wind to move global trade is more than an environmental solution; it's a beautiful reminder that progress and nature don't have to be enemies. 🌍⛵✨
I'm curious if reducing human populations, to reduce transportation pollution, is considered in these groups? Look around at your friends, family and associates. How many kids do they have? How many grandchildren? How many products do they have and want for their lives? We have massive pollution from cargo ships for one reason. That is to transport huge amounts of cargo throughout the industrialized world. World population is doubling every 50 years. We are destroying our environment. Sailing cargo ships could be a positive. But, by the time it is developed on a large scale, it may be too late.
This is a Vanity Project
Solar fabric sails are the future 😊
There was a sail cargo boat called the SV Kwai out of Honolulu 15 years ago, it would sail south to Christmas Island and back. She was beautiful
How many seacontainers can it carry?

Climate Change is fraud!
19:16 Doesn't have to be one or the other, like a plug-in hybrid electric automobile. ⛵➕🚢
Deindustrialization is a sad final fate for Europe.
It's so much prettier too, with it's beautiful sails, no longer an eye sore to look at.
Old tech with new.
Super interesting , glad we are coming up with a change of concept. Be well all , Thank u and good luck.
Righty O it sounds to me like you've got things backwards
Good. We need all thi ks to clean this planet
Meanwhile China cranks out super sized container ships ate an unprecedented clip. Europeans really are a lark at this point.
