Two aid workers were tragically killed in an attack on a humanitarian convoy in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The attack occurred in Kivunano, following the capture of Kanyabayonga by the M23 armed group. Protesters set vehicles on fire, leading to the deaths of the aid workers and sparking panic in North Kivu province.
The ongoing conflict between the Congolese army and the M23 group has displaced millions of people, with the total now reaching 6.7 million in the DRC. Many in the region are expressing frustration over the perceived failure of the army and the United Nations to provide protection for civilians.
In response to the escalating violence, additional troops have been deployed in the area. Al Jazeera’s Alain Uaykani reports from Butembo in DR Congo, where the situation remains tense and uncertain.
The deaths of these aid workers serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by humanitarian workers in conflict zones, and the urgent need for increased protection and support for those delivering essential assistance to vulnerable populations.
