From Siblings to Sandals: How Three Innovators are Transforming Bali’s River Trash into Stylish Furniture | Global Recycling Initiative

Indonesia is known for its stunning beaches and lush landscapes, but it also ranks as one of the world’s biggest contributors to ocean plastics. Rivers in the country play a major role in this issue, with tons of trash flowing into the ocean on a daily basis. In an effort to combat this problem, the local nonprofit Sungai Watch has been working tirelessly to save about 3 metric tons of trash from entering the ocean every day.

The driving force behind Sungai Watch is a trio of young siblings who are dedicated to cleaning up their community and making a positive impact on the environment. Through simple barriers and manual labor, they are able to intercept trash before it reaches the ocean, sorting through it to recycle and repurpose as much as possible.

During a visit to Bali, we had the opportunity to meet the Bencheghib siblings and witness firsthand the incredible work they are doing. From turning discarded sandals into new footwear to transforming plastic bags into stylish chairs, they are finding innovative ways to address Indonesia’s trash problem.

This documentary sheds light on the urgent need for action when it comes to addressing the issue of ocean plastics, and highlights the importance of grassroots organizations like Sungai Watch in making a difference. The siblings are truly river warriors, leading the charge in the fight against pollution and inspiring others to join them in their mission.

While the problem of ocean plastics is a daunting one, the efforts of the Bencheghib siblings and Sungai Watch are proof that change is possible. By working together and taking action, we can all play a part in reducing waste and protecting our oceans for future generations.
