Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Belgrade in Serbia on Saturday to voice their opposition to the restart of a controversial lithium mine project. The mine, located near the city of Loznica, is seen as a vital source for Europe’s transition to green energy.
The mining project is being developed by Rio Tinto, an Anglo-Australian mining company, and has sparked widespread concern due to its potential environmental impact. The project has become a major point of contention in Serbian politics in recent years, with protesters demanding that the government take action to protect the environment.
Serbia is home to vast lithium deposits, making it an important player in the production of lithium, a key component in batteries for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. However, the environmental consequences of mining and processing lithium have raised serious concerns among activists and local residents.
The protest in Belgrade highlights the growing opposition to projects that prioritize economic development over environmental sustainability. As the world shifts towards renewable energy sources, it is crucial for governments and companies to consider the long-term impact of their actions on the planet and local communities.

In East Germany me and my friends, in America would not have been discriminated against for being gay. Gay men didn't suffer discrimination in the workplace in East Germany, like they do in America either, because again they discriminated against anti-social people, instead of gay men. I would have been discriminated against for being an enemy of the state in East Germany, but not for being gay. So therefore; I would have been better off growing up in East Germany. Because me and my friends aren't anti-social, nor are we enemies of the State. In East Germany they went after enemies of the state, not gay men like they do in America.
