Bad Bunny is on to his next movie adventure, joining Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2 — the sequel to the cult-classic sports comedy film released in 1996 — The Hollywood Reporter revealed Tuesday (Sept. 10).
There are no details yet about Bad Bunny’s role.
The artist born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio made his acting debut in 2021 as Arturo “Kitty” Paez — a rich, well-connected kid who gets involved in the cartel life — for the drug-dealing drama Narcos: México on Netflix. He then moved on to film, where he starred opposite Brad Pitt in Bullet Train (2022) and Gael García Bernal in Cassandro (2023). Up next, he has Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller Caught Stealing at Sony Pictures.
“It ain’t over,” Sandler wrote Monday on Instagram alongside a photo of Happy’s Boston Bruins jersey, signaling the start of production. “The way I see it… we’ve only just begun.”
The original Happy Gilmore follows the story of a failed hockey player who discovers a talent for golf and competes in paid tournaments to earn money to prevent the foreclosure of his beloved grandmother’s house.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the forthcoming sequel is directed by Kyle Newacheck, who also directed the 2019 Murder Mystery movie starring Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Original cast members Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald will return for the sequel: Bowen as Virginia Venit, Happy’s love interest, and McDonald as Shooter McGavin, an arrogant golfer and the film’s villain.
On The Tonight Show last month, Sandler confirmed that Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce will appear in Happy Gilmore 2 as well. “Travis has… he mentioned it, so we have a nice something for Travis,” Sandler said of the gig that Kelce publicly pined for earlier this year. “He’s gonna come by. He’s a very nice guy. You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”
The screenplay was co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy and will be co-produced with Jack Giarraputo and Robert Simonds. Dennis Dugan, who also directed the original film, will executive produce with Judit Maull, Kevin Grady, David Bausch and Barry Bernardi.
