President Donald Trump’s recent announcement that his administration plans to “reclaim” control of the Panama Canal has sparked controversy and raised concerns about potential geopolitical implications. The Panama Canal, a vital waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, has been under Panamanian control since the United States handed over ownership more than two decades ago.
Trump alleges that Panama has violated a decades-old neutrality treaty by allowing Chinese influence to grow at the Canal. In response, Panama has strongly refuted these claims and is pushing back against Trump’s assertions.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has delved into Trump’s strategy to take control of the Canal, examining why such a move may not necessarily result in a complete takeover. The risks associated with attempting to seize control of the Canal are also explored in the video.
The video segment begins by outlining Trump’s desire to secure ownership of the Panama Canal, followed by a detailed overview of the Canal’s history and significance as a crucial artery for global trade. WSJ then considers alternative options available to the Trump administration in addressing concerns about Chinese influence at the Canal.
The discussion progresses to the alleged violation of a longstanding neutrality treaty by Panama, as cited by Trump. The potential consequences and implications of such a breach are examined in depth, shedding light on the complexities surrounding the ownership and governance of the Canal.
As the video nears its conclusion, the question of “What’s next?” is posed, prompting viewers to contemplate the potential outcomes of Trump’s aggressive stance towards the Panama Canal.
In a fast-paced news environment where clarity and understanding can be elusive, WSJ’s news explainers serve as invaluable resources for breaking down complex issues and providing audiences with a comprehensive understanding of current events. The analysis provided in this video offers valuable insights into the implications of Trump’s plan to “take back” the Panama Canal, emphasizing the need for careful consideration of the risks and potential consequences of such a bold move.
As the debate surrounding the Panama Canal continues to evolve, it is essential for policymakers and stakeholders to weigh the diplomatic, economic, and strategic implications of any decisions made regarding the future of this critical waterway.

Don’t stop your enemies when they are sabotaging themselves.
What does it matter. This president is all talk with no serious planning. JD who? Elon? his rockets are blowing up. Overpaid for X. TSLA sales plummeting. Seriously?
Trump, Vance, and Musk are not to be trusted, taking their marching orders from the Kremlin, following the Putin playbook.
To all Panamanians, Canadians, Mexicans, and Europeans, just know there are tens of are millions of Americans who do not agree with, nor do we support, the current occupants of the White House, and we never will. We Americans stand firmly with you, with Canada, with Mexico, with Denmark, and especially with Ukraine. Love and blessings to you all. God save American Democracy, and the United States of America, from the malignant growth known as the MAGA movement that has taken over the Republican Party.
It is plausible that the US would establish a military zone around the canal to combat drug trafficking. That could justify "taking the canal back".
"They could hide scanners in the concrete and the rebar" ngl starting to sound a bit paranoid…
This is what we voted for: Canada, Panama, Greenland, Gaza 🇺🇸
Trump has broken the trade treaty he himself signed with Canada, a treaty signed by Trump has the same weight as a treaty signed by Putin, not worth the paper its written one.

I Fink I can, I Fink I can, I Fink I can… It's true. The little Private Equity Firm that could
CK Hutchison sounds benign and western enough 😂how did Trump know?
Basically, the United States is uncomfortable with non-white canal operations
As a Panamanian, I'll admit this is the most pro-US note I've seen on the topic, and I guess it's fair, since most outlets I'm familiar with just outright ridicule the idea.
The Canal being successfully operated by more than 99.9% Panamanian hands, and us singlehandedly doubling its capacity in 2016 with a cost of more than $5B USD is a major source of pride for our nation. What Trump claims is not only false but also downright insulting.
I'll be happy to answer any questions any of you guys outside of Panama may have.
A despicable and wildly irresponsible action by a despicable president. It's shameful that the WSJ would even entertain the idea of doing this.
Donald Trumps incompetence knows no bounds
This clown is vying for the title of "Most Short-Sighted President Ever". Actions don't take place in a vacuum; for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction. That's especially true when you're stepping on someone's toes, whether it's by disregarding a nation's sovereignty and cornerstone of their economy, or forcing the hand of a global competitor with the time, resources, and motivation to thwart your efforts.
Unfortunately, the sentiment in the rest of America (the continent) is that the US never really helped other countries in two centuries and furthermore took advantage or manipulated them and now, when China makes business besides the US, it just wants to bully smaller Latin American countries without providing anything in return (as usual from their perspective). The US could use the carrot instead of the stick but it will have to compete with China.
It is a pity that a report on the Panama Canal, which for the past 25 years has been operated exclusively by Panamanians, does not include any Panamanian experts on the canal. They might have corrected an important detail in the report: the five ports adjacent to the Canal still belong to Panama, what Black Rock bought was the concession to operate two of them for the next 24-25 years (which, by the way, will now be operated by a Swiss shipping company).
Is this just another Trump distraction while he ruins peoples' retirement investments with his tariffs?
It’s Panama’s. This idea of trying to take it back is absurd and backwards
A man a plan, a canal, Panama. Palindrome warfare
🇺🇸🤴🏻🤜🏼 🇵🇦🤦🏼♂️
Take it back Trump!
The WSJ report indicates that CK Hutchison’s control over the ports at both ends of the Panama Canal has ended due to BlackRock’s recent acquisition. This is a notable shift in U.S. efforts to counter Chinese influence in the region. However, this does not mean China has lost all its leverage over Panama or Latin America as a whole.
Even though BlackRock now controls the Canal’s ports, China has multiple other economic footholds in Panama, including infrastructure projects like the 2018 bridge contract over the Canal. Such projects could still provide leverage in a geopolitical crisis. Chinese companies also own and operate logistics hubs, energy projects, and telecommunications infrastructure throughout Latin America, which could be used for economic pressure or intelligence gathering.
China is Panama’s second-largest trading partner after the U.S. and has major investments in banking, real estate, and logistics. Even without direct control over the ports, Panama’s economic dependence on China gives Beijing significant indirect influence. Panama remains an entry point for Chinese economic expansion in Latin America, even after backing away from the Belt and Road Initiative.
The primary concern is that China doesn’t need to “control” the Canal directly to disrupt U.S. access. If tensions escalate, China could exert pressure on Panama through economic means, persuading it to favor Chinese trade or restrict U.S. military logistics. Even if the Panamanian government remains neutral, the sheer scale of China’s trade in the region means Beijing can indirectly shape the operational environment.
The Panama Canal is just one piece of China’s strategy. Across Latin America, China has invested in Brazil’s ports, Argentina’s lithium mines, Ecuador’s oil sector, and Peru’s infrastructure. If conflict erupts, China could leverage its broader economic network to disrupt supply chains beyond just the Canal.
BlackRock’s acquisition of the ports is a win for U.S. interests, but China’s influence in Panama is far from gone. Beijing has spent decades embedding itself economically, and its ability to influence regional policies through trade, investment, and infrastructure remains a serious long-term concern. In the event of war or heightened tensions, China wouldn’t need direct control over the Canal to create disruptions—it could achieve similar outcomes through economic and political pressure.
China is positioning itself in Panama and Latin America to have economic control over the region in case of a larger geopolitical conflict.
The big problem here is that trump lies at a level never seen before , so when he says anything is hard to believe anything he says
1:10 kinda like how the US violated its agreement with Ukraine and nuclear reduction?
Although USA may be an opportunist selfish country like China still USA has helped & co-operated with Panama. But short-sighted Panama could understand USA falling on Chinese trap or its some of influencial ignorant foolish citizens just Jelensky of Ukraine. Now Panama has to face the grave consequences due to its over-confidence.
Can’t and won’t
Sounds like China is better at capitalism than the US
If only US was the richest country in the world and could finance their own foreign commercial expansion. Though it seems at odds with the isolationist policy currently proposed.
This group of bullies wants to ruin the reputation of the US like they’ve ruined their own personal reputations.
NO MORE INVASIONS‼️
The US isn't exactly cutting edge when it comes to Infrastructure anymore…thanks to republicans.
nO nEw wArS, AMIRITE MAGA?
I highly doubt the canal will remain neutral if it falls under US hands but maybe that's the point behind his recent statements
We could rename it the American Canal.
MAGA at it again. what's new lol
You mean your friends from Black Rock are reclaiming it.. they have already ..!!
China is spying on us and that is unacceptable, only US are allowed to spy on people
– US logic for anything
France will reclaim back Louisiana, it was stolen by the US. And Mexico the Southern States that were stolen by the Gringos. Russia the Alaska. And so on.
why didn't you guys interview a single Panamanian person
What a shameful behaviour of the US American regime.
Panamá para panameños!! 🇵🇦☝️
No, he won´t. Made the orange clown read a history book, and by the way the US had nothing to do with the EXPANSION of the canal. He is just salty his name was removed from a building.
Mexico will pay for the canal.
A criminal just like Putin.
