Beirut hit by Israeli strikes, tensions mount as displaced citizens return

Israel has launched two air strikes in Lebanon, despite a recent ceasefire agreement, raising tensions between the two neighboring countries. The Israeli army claims that one of the strikes targeted a Hezbollah weapons facility in southern Lebanon, while another occurred near Sidon.

Hezbollah, on the other hand, reports Israeli tank fire in border villages and accuses Israeli forces of violating the ceasefire agreement. The Lebanese army has been tasked with enforcing a demilitarized zone as displaced Palestinians begin to return to their homes.

The Israeli military has issued warnings against movement in the southern region until Friday, citing the need to enforce the ceasefire. This comes amidst ongoing political divisions within Israel over the implementation of the ceasefire.

Hezbollah officials have indicated a willingness to defer to the Lebanese armed forces, signifying a potential shift in power dynamics in previously Hezbollah-controlled areas. However, Lebanese criticism of Israeli actions continues to persist.

As the situation remains fluid, with over a million displaced individuals returning to their homes, the region is on edge. Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh in Amman and Zein Basravi in Beirut are providing updates on the latest developments in the region.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, coupled with the complex political landscape in the region, highlights the fragile nature of the ceasefire agreement and the challenges of maintaining peace in the Middle East.
