By train to Hudson Bay | DW Documentary
Anyone who wants to travel overland from Winnipeg to Churchill has to take the train. Only one track leads through Canada’s tundra to Hudson Bay. There’s only one thing for passengers to do – relax, unwind and admire the wild beauty of the landscape through the carriage window.
The train journey begins in Winnipeg, the multicultural capital of the Canadian province of Manitoba, characterized by Canada’s indigenous population and immigrants from all over the world. As soon as the train leaves the city, the vast prairie opens up. Grain now grows where bison once grazed. Further north, we encounter swampy coniferous forests. First Nation communities live here, and rely on the railways to access their reserves. They bought and renovated parts of the line when the tracks were washed out in 2017 – an event that led to railway operations being interrupted. Last but not least is the treeless Arctic tundra. After 1,700 kilometers and a 45-hour train journey, we reach the terminus in the small town of Churchill with around 900 inhabitants. In autumn, when the waters begin to freeze, polar bears gather here and the aurora borealis sparkles in the night.

Such a refreshing video, I love this kind of doc coz it's like traveling to a certain place but in the comforts of home.
I took my teaching education classes in Fairbanks Alaska, we had an Yupik, grandma getting her teaching degree, trying to set the ultimate example!
Her favorite food was fermented whale's blubber. ❤
She had a kid's made book about 4 Yupik teens who followed a polar bear on to sea ice hunting, wind blew the ice away from shore. Only one survived, with no fingers or toes! Unforgivable climate!
I love Canada. It's like the US but without fascism.
Thank you DW for a great documentary
Thank you DW for featuring Indigenous People in Canada!
Canadian here. Riding Mountain is a great place to check out. Drive on a loop road with Bison up close and personal – if you are lucky. Churchill is still on my list to visit one day. Thanks DW.
Wow. My home province. Had to watch this.
so wie deutschland, canada schafft sich ab
Yes please come visit us in Canada, we love visitors!
EDIT: Also, please note that as a Metis person, hunting is not a way of life. It 'used' to be a way of life. But it's 2025 and we dont' need to kill innocent beings anymore to survive. So please don't think we are all hunters, we are not, some us value life and what it reigns
😊🎉 wow..
Where is the credit to John Barry for your playing of the "Dances with Wolves" main theme throughout THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION? That is a copyright violation. Sony Music would not be happy…
Happy Canada Day
Such a beautiful video after all the politics and hush mushkil this was much needed
How much is this trip???
Educative doc. It is always interesting to learn about other cultures. Thanks DW
Great documentary. I recently was researching this area. Just wish the beautiful cinematography was uploaded in 4k resolution. The YouTube video has 1080p option but the footage looks 720p at best and sometimes lower with a lot pixilation indicative of 480p.
We're train nerds and you've added Churchill to our bucket list. Thank you!
Fantastic!
this is the worst documentary I have ever seen. At what point is the train the main part of the doc? the train leaves the stationn at 10 minutes in, and at 11, we are interviewing a dancer. wtf.
Happy Canada Day, 2025!
This documentary was made in 2024, according to your ending credits, what the the fuck? Tell people that
Do better dw
Cool video though none the less
I knew this was going to be terrible revisionism but already we have a Cree wearing a Haudenosaunee flag in the first scene (the two tribes live thousands of kms apart). Then a painting of a Sasquatch while the narrator says "it's a reminder of the land's original inhabitants". LMAO, let's see just how ridiculous this gets.
very little about the train, but more about woke indigenous rights…..same old, same old babble
stopping and blocking trains gets no respect from anyone, especially alcoholics that live on welfare and contribute nothing to society…..they are a burden on hard working Canadians without a doubt
love the Ukranian, French & European heritage that built Manitoba for what it is today and definitely not skateboarding…..a province with a future for sure
“All crossing the vast expanse of Canada from Vancouver to Toronto”…… um what about the Atlantic provinces? NB, PEI, NS, NB… didn’t even mention Quebec this time…. Eastern Canada is not Toronto!!! Ugh 🙄
Thank you DW! Thank you for releasing it on Kanada day!
Happy Canada day everyone!
Thanks DW for showing beautiful Northern Canada and the lives around the railroad on Canada Day❤

Fantastic!!
Thank you, German public TV!
DW,
Kindly include full original (NOT auto-generated) English subtitles.
Did Canadian Tire buy the naming rights to the bay?
Will it be called Mastercraft Bay, Noma Bay, Certified Bay, Motomaster Bay, or Canadian Tire Bay?
Good documentary but better if in hindi
This should be in VR!
I think i will take this train ride ❤😅
