Canada – The return of the Blackfoot | DW Documentary
The Canadian province of Alberta is home to the Blackfoot. They’re a First Nations people in North America. Almost threatened with extinction by white colonization, they’re now back in the public eye, along with their culture.
The Blackfoot were hunters, gatherers, gifted horsemen and feared warriors. Robbed of most of their land by the whites, they’ve been fighting for their survival on three small reserves since the end of the 19th century.
The Canadian government pursued a policy of cultural eradication. After many legal and social battles, the Blackfoot are now back in the public eye, along with their culture. They practice their rituals and celebrate their traditions. These include relay races with horses, known as Indian Relay Racing. Another important tradition are powwows, where various Blackfoot communities gather for celebrations like the four-day sun dance.
For Kyle, a young man in his early 30s, this means a lot. Since he has been allowed to cultivate his cultural identity and acknowledge his origins, he has been able to lead a self-determined and free life.

I feel they have a lot in common with the Lakota-Nakota-Dakota Nations 😉 💕
I love videos like this! It's always so fascinating looking into other ways of life, especially in other parts of the world.
The Colonizer called every indigneous ppl savages, the colonizers were evil and cruel
As an Albertan, parts of this video are painfully embarrassing (like the pronunciation of Ft Macleod). But I am really grateful that our First Nations are being celebrated for some of their traditional values and skills, and I would love to see more of it.
Do they scalp you?😮
Primitive ppl doing primitive things 😂
Native indigenous people are the Goat and the realest mf's out there, they are the only substantial link we have to the past and I hope they soon start getting the respect they deserve.
My Grandmother was Blackfoot/White from Quebec City born 1907. Her Mothers side Great GM was Blackfoot full blood 🩸. Pigeon,Fox,Blood, and Black Foot( Saisika). Also my mothers Father Mother was Cherokee the Black ones.I’m a Black Man USA🎉.
I love such documentaries, because, I hope my continent of Africa, actively starts the movement back to our indigenous roots.
Hey Alberta, Come visit you won't regret it !
Invaders who have conquered indigenous peoples of all areas of the world carry need to take responsibility for the abuses and crimes committed against the rightful original guardians of the land. Only after accountability, can reconciliation begin.. The First Nations of Canada need to have a large role in making decisions about the future of the lands. All immigrants over the last 500 years need to thank the First Nation people for sharing their land. The First Europeans, generally failed the First Nation people. I am proud to be able to live next to a beautiful culture. I am happy to see them take pride in their beautiful people and culture.
More power to them ( Blackfoot )
I know and believe as the Blackfoot and other indigenous do. Or Mother is alive and speaks in so many beautiful ways. Right now? I feel she's growing angry and impatient with humanity.
Reviving their culture at Taxpayer's expense. Native Bands can't even look after themselves. 😮😂😅😊
DW doesn’t need to lie — it selects truths that fit the Western frame.
Ukraine: focus on Russian aggression, little coverage of NATO provocation, Maidan coup
Palestine: DW often parrots Israeli security narratives, marginalizing Palestinian sovereignty claims
Africa: DW promotes Western-funded “development” while ignoring neocolonial extractivism by multinationals
No-one is legal on a STOLEN LAND!
why dw make the probably the best documentary ?
There are four Blackfoot/Blackfeet tribes, 3 tribes in southern Alberta (Kainai, Piikuni, Siksika) and 1 tribe across the border in Montana, Amskapi Piikani.
The horse trainers loaded their horse on the Piikuni reservation, and they took their horses to my reservation’s rodeo grounds/racetrack, the Kainai (Blood tribe) reservation, in Standoff. Then the relay horse race was on the Piikuni reservation, in Brocket.
I think the Big Snake guy, with the white bison, is from Siksika.
Just a side note: Dan Fox, his grandson Asher is in the same class/grade as my daughter 😊
Our main Sundance/Circle Camp is every summer on my reserve in Kainai, but, there are smaller holy societies that have their own sundances throughout Kainai, Piikuni, Siksika, and Amskapi Piikani…absolutely no cameras or video cameras are allowed at our Sundance’s, keep them out! Sundance’s are our holy practices, we would prefer privacy during our prayers and ceremonies.
Every tribe in Canada and USA has their own main powwow celebration every summer, throughout the summer, usually starting in June ending in August, maybe September. Every weekend.
Kainai, my tribe, just had our Indian Days pow wow last weekend of July 19.
Everyone is welcome, Native and non-Native, to most pow wow celebrations. Bring your cameras and video cameras. Take pictures, make friends, have an Indian taco, and dance in the intertribal part of the dances. There are both competition dances, and intertribal dances where everyone can dance regardless of who you are or how you’re dressed.
Love this channel. Thank you !!!
Most if not all of the Western culture and tradition comes from the Spanish. They brought horses and equestrian art, as well as livestock and agriculture as it is today. Why don't you do documentaries about that?
Very interesting to me a African-American that been here 400 plus years I find migrants interesting understanding I'm from West Africa I never migrated from my region I evolved and adapted there although I understand the Great migration Out of Africa 70,000 years ago I never migrated I was brought to America so again I've always been interested in migrants these natives migrated from Asia through the Bering strait chasing the dinosaurs or game to the Americas tens of thousands of years ago the pilgrims were migrants also✌️
DW, Good job as usual
❤❤❤❤❤
13:30 same story in Australia.
Indigenous cultures were violently disrupted by colonization of 👱🏻👱🏻♀️. Their traditions, languages, and ways of life were often erased or suppressed by European settlers.
This documentary is a powerful tribute to the resilience of the Blackfoot people. It's inspiring to see them reconnect with their traditions and restore their cultural identity.
I live near these areas it is a truly stunning part of the world.
This story is the story also of the Indigenous in the US. Sameboarding schools, same cultural and language eradication!
This is amazing, educational and inspiring to see young Blackfoot warriors going back to their roots, embracing traditions of the ancestors who were driven off the land that belonged to them.
One of the driving Instrument alongwith Humans from Ancient to now (modern Times) is CULTURE. IT exists as long as Humans exist on this planet.
Finally a documentary about real Canadians
Albertans , They are more like Americans than Canadians . Scary
The way he sounds aooo aaayyy is quite dangerous 😂 I lower the volume
Hmmmm this seems to be treating indigenous first nations people as a monolith.
Most of Alberta is Cree Nation land. Actually the largest number of Canadian first nations are Cree. With over 350,000. Black foot have about 25,000 and 35,000 in the US. They were mainly in Montana and the southern tip of Alberta. I think treaty 3 territory. Black foot and cree signed a peace treaty in 1871. Traditionally they were in warfare over hunting territory around the Buffalo migration.
Different cultures different languages. Think about Europe. Not all of the Germanic tribes shared the same language and culture and they often fought amongst themselves.
I think it's important to acknowledge all the tribes and different languages and cultures and not treat them as a monolith.
Side note. Residential schools are well documented as having a horrible legacy of sexual and physical abuses.
No one is denying that, or the systematic and generational trauma as a result.
That being said to date not one body has been recovered from these "unmarked" graves. Those lidar anomalies dug up so far have revealed old pipes utility lines and construction remnants.
After a few excavation sites revealed nothing, excavation of sites seem to have stopped. Made big story and headlines of 1700 anomalies underground near Residential schools and indigenous TB hospitals. And I am not saying there isn't something to be found if all 1700 where dug up, but after hundreds I suspect no one wants to risk it and ruin that Narrative. The shock and awe did get more people talking about the atrocities of Residential schools. Which was True.
However, until a body is unearthed there are NO UNMARKED GRAVES just underground anomalies.
Truth and reconciliation means Truth be told so we can all reconcile with the each other and the history of this nation. That means whole truth. Good bad and ugly.
Yup bringing back more pagan culture. Yes, we are getting closer to End times.
